If I were to put a Seymour duncan super distortion in the bridge position and a jazzmaster pickup in the neck. Would there be really noticable differences in how much output each pickup has????

well a super distortion has rather more output than a jazzmaster soapbar so yes, you may find they cancel each other out and produce a very thin sound.

my jag had a stock single in the neck and a kent armstrong hotrail in the bridge and unless my tech wired them out of phase by accident or something when i played them together they were very light and thin sounding.

they shouldnt cancel out. phase cancelations happen with very similar pickups (hence 'quack' 2/4 positions on strat). what may of happened to you tool is that the hotness of the kent armstrong compared to the jag pup made the sounds more similar than normal, and you got some cancelations.

very possibly, but if hes talking about mixing a stock jazz with something hot then hes likely to get the same thing no?

quite possibly, but theres problably more difference between an SD and jazzy pup than a jag pup and hotrail... only one way to find out though.

I just happen to have a jazzmaster with a vintage singlecoil in the neck and a dimarzio super distortion in the bridge; its fine, the super distortion has a lot less output than most people think, the pickups acctually balance quite nicely but the middle position is pretty lifeless. I dont particularly like the super distortion though, not all that ballsy or cutting, I'd go for a seymour duncan JB or Custom if I had my day again.

Other than the middle position the pickups dont affect each other, if thats what you're worried about though.

No the middle position isnt really much of a concern, although I would prefer all positions to sound good. I just can't get over the sound of a Jazzmaster's neck pickup. And I was really hoping for a Super Distortion combined with my DS-2 for that "In Utero" sound. I do know that kurt later on switched his pickups to JB's but that was after the fact.

just that is wrong. and to make tragic mad, ill go on, im not sure which pick up the jag had at the time they recorded, but either way he used the sansamp more than the ds-2

true, I forgot about the Sansamp, but he didn't quit using the DS-2 at that time, he still had it for recording and he still had it in his stage rig. But good call on the Sansamp.

i know he didnt quit using it, he barely used it though. he used it with his acoustics more. most songs on in utero used the sansamp, not ds2

The sansamp with the Twin Reverb amp is what makes the In Utero sound, people need to realize that getting all Kurts pedals are not going to get you any "era" of there sound its more then that and more importantly his amplification also had a great bearing on his sound.

I can't believe we're once again discussing which average pedal was used for which album. There is a site, which says all there is to say on the rather limited subject of 'kurt's equipment', funnily enough its called www.kurtsequipment.com and as far as I know/can tell, its exhaustive/ complete/ the final say/ all you need to know/ the proverbial 'it'

i have little respect for the musicianship of people who spend their guitar playing careers trying to exact the sound and style of "teh kurdtz." call him a great songwriter, fine, but stop questing for his mediocre tone.

It's no different than somebody going out and buying marhsall amps and strats because they dig Hendrix's sound (look at SRV) and they're both great musicians. Or somebody buying a dimebucker and a Krank amp (a lot of people) because they want a similar sound to Dimebag's. Even if somebody would want they same type of sound from their instrument as kurt's that doesn't mean their trying to copycat. I have little respect for somebody who assumes that means their just a wannabe.

Its fine by me if someone wants that sound, its up to them and everyone has to admit a little bit of hero-worship comes into play when picking up equipment. But would stevie have sounded crap if he'd picked a les paul jr and a vox ac30? or and tele and an orange stack? no. It literally doesn't matter. by the way he used a fender super reverb and a tubescreamer rather than a Marshall '59 SLP and a fuzz face; SRV didnt copy him outright, I don't think.

All I was saying is that its a pointless exercise (and a bit boring) discussing it since all there is to know on the subject is well documented on several websites.
