Mustang string gauge

I hope I'm not bringing up something that's been asked before, but I wanna make sure. Mustangs are really small. and im under the impression the neck isnt the strongest, if I was to use say 13 gauge, ernie balls probably, would they have any affect on the neck? or do any strings work? what do you use on your mustang?

Depends how you had it tuned. If you had it in standard tuning, it'd pull the neck forward and cause it to become pretty unplayable (I'd imagine). Can't say I've tried it though.

I use 10s on mine. They work perfectly (seeing as that's what it had on when it came out of the factory)

What gauge did it come with? You may need to adjust the truss rod if you move up several gauges. I use 10's.

I just got this beautiful olympic white mustang, and it came with nines and i HATE nines, they're uncomfortable and they make me feel like i just cant hit them at all. so I was hoping to get some 11s or 12s, and yeah i play standard tuning, but i think im gonna go with 10s for now and see that everythings alright, if i got 11s could i drop the tuning a half step or whole and thatd keep the neck straight? I dont know nearly as much as i should when it comes to setting up guitars

I use 9's--I prefer them, but I've had 10's on my Mustang before with no problems--I don't see a problem with 11's either--but that would also depend on the wood in your neck & body--if it's cheaper--who knows--but I don't think an 11 would hurt--I think it's more up to how heavy you like the wound strings.

Why not contact Fender--and see what they say?

I just put 10s on, and its sounding great. Fender amps mixed with a fender guitar is so awesome. But it gets really thin, I'm going in this week to get a big muff and im hoping thatll give me the sound im looking for.

The Big Muff will add a lot to your sound. It did mine.

But I still found that the sound was a bit lacking. Then I decided to put a 'bucker in the bridge and it gave me exactly what I was looking for. It added a lot more bite and gave me a more powerful sound. Perfect for me 😁

lol I've already got 6 distortions I use and I still need to get the Big Muff, 'cos I know for some stuff I play it has the sound I want.

The Big Muff is most excellent! I only have 2 distortions (the Double Muff as well as the Big one) and they are awesome. They give me enough variety that I don't think I'll need any more really... Well... Not in the forseeable future. 😉

Yeah to reply to both without quoting, I'm gonna get a mini humbuck bridge side, as thats a sound ive always loved. and the sound im looking for would basically be described as big and messy. I HATE that gibson crunch you get from a marshall, and really tight feedback, i hate that stuff. I don't mean i dont like crunch, but a crunch more akin to Mudhoney than Street Dogs. J Mascis is a huge influence along with the Mudhoney sound, I dont even know, man. I can imagine this sounds alot like rambling but its hard to describe what i want, but i know what it is.

I'm lookin at this big muff, and then most probably a duncan hot rail.. but if there are any suggestions for a really good mini hum?

The Big Muff will probably fit your needs then. I know Mascis used to use Super Fuzz Univox pedal, or at least that's what I heard. Expensive as hell though.

i like the hotrails. i have one in the bridge of my stang. it sounded #### with 250k pots though. put 500k and a .22(or what ever) cap on it to make it shine

yeah i used to play with a really cheap super fuzz knock off, or maybe it was an original with no name. it just had no name on it anywhere, faed off maybe? i dont know. found it in my uncle's basement. i asked him about it said he couldnt remember, but sometime during university he was in a punk band! which is pretty #### cool of a guy who now designs computer software. it was a sick pedal, and i was playin an artcore then, and it was pretty hot stuff, but the pedal is now lost in the suburbs of downtown Montreal, forgotten at a gig! i was upset to say the least. i've always felt it unnecessary to pay over 100 bucks for a pedal. 6 buck danelectro fuzz pedal, with a no name strat copy, and a musicman amp was one of the most awesome jam set ups I've ever played

very sweet, i think im leaning really close to gettin one.. have you ever used a lace sensor single coil? I dont wanna buy one without trying it, and i dont know anybody that has em cept for the billy corgan strat.

ahaha yes, I definitely would love to have one. Big muff comes first though, and like i said, over 100 bucks for a pedal is practically against my religion. hey look a pawn shop!
