i was just looking around for a good amp and came across MATAMP -- are there any brits here, who use matamps? what are they like?? i

I've never heard of them, but they certainly look cool.

it seems they were the ones who built the first amps for ORANGE, and then stayed around, though somewhat less noticed.

their minimat is kind of a reaction to the tiny terror, i guess, same price, but handbuilt (in the uk, if that matters) and supposedly with higher quality parts.

it feels pretty frustrating to look around for cheap 2nd hand fender amps, so i thought i might look around for what

Ok, I've just looked around on the website and they are quite expencive (I didnt realise the minimat was quite THAT small 😉 ), but still that isn't a bad price. And I bet the quality is second to none 😀

I had a custom GTL for a while, an absolute BEAST. They will make an amp especially for you, exactly as you like. Cleans were amazing, gain sounds were even better. I guess the nearest sounding thing you'd get on the high-street would be orange AD amps, but these are just thicker sounding, all hand made point-to-point wiring. And you can have 'GREEN' written across the front and covered in green vinyl.

When I sold it (for a much smaller amp) I promised myself that if I ever became a rock star I would have one just next to my vintage blackface '65 super reverb with some sort of monkey-tech to sort it all out for me. Yes its more money than an orange, but you get what you pay for when you buy a matamp. Nothing but good thingas to say about them.

To jellybelly's point, I think that their amps (and Orange amps) are really more for dirty sounds than clean ones.

I had an Orange AD 30R combo-- and I could not get into the clean sound at all; seeing as how that's mostly the tone I go for I had to get rid of it. Just keep that in mind.

yep, i just a had a look around on the matamp forums and the samples from the small amps

yeah they're not 'clean machines' but it depends what you like, if you like a bit of breakup to your clean you'll be fine. My GTL was 120W so I had plenty of headroom but if youre going lower wattage then the best way to get 'cleans' is with you volume control!!! I'd say if you tried a tiny terror or an AD30 you'd get an idea if the el84 sound is for you. Ultimate clean low-wattage tone, get a new fender princeton RI or even a Deluxe (but they are hand wired and very expensive!)

Ebay Princeton reverbs are not so crazy. Silverfaces are generally considered just about as good as the super-old black face ones.

I know this is a tele, but check out this guy's sound. Cripes! I made me want to buy a tele and princeton amp.

blues juniors have very good cleans, not quite as bright as say a twin, but still very bright.
