Yeah Fran pot that pickup. I had the same problem because my band were so stupidly loud - both pickups would just scream.
Pot the pickup in it's cover and claw and it will cure the problem completely at any amount of gain. You just need to make a double-boiler. I use a saucepan with an upturned saucer in the bottom.
Half fill it with water then put a pyrex bowl on top of the saucer.
Get the water simmering then put the wax in the bowl and wait until it melts. They say to use a mix of parafin and bees wax but I've used candle wax on a pair of humbuckers and it worked just fine.
Bung the pickup into the wax suspended by the wire held up by a clothes peg on a chop stick (or pencil if you don't like Chinese).
Leave to cook until no more bubbles are coming out of the pickup.
Then what I do is remove the bowl and leave the wax to cool with the pickup inside until the wax is soft and you can pull out the pickup surrounded by a gloop of wax. Clean off the gloop with a cloth then leave the pickup to cool. Once it's solid use a hairdryer and a clean cloth to polish off the remaining wax. If you're a baldy ask your mrs if you can use her hair dryer.
Serve with a sprig of fresh corriander and a squeeze of lemon juice.
