Why flip the tailpiece?

its so you can feed the strings straight through it without going under and around the tailpiece, but ive heard it decreases string tension which can be ugly to play with

i like it. it havent had any problems with the less break angle promblem, but i have a TOM too, which is probably higher. i did it to stop the vibrato, which i dont use

It just makes the tension feel looser, which can be extreme considering its already a short scale neck. Personally i like that feel though. I used to raise the tail piece on my Gibsons to get that 'slack' feel.

Not necessarily, depends on other things as well like how high you have your action, string gauge and what tunings you use.

I dont use it on my Stangs because i use 10 gauge strings and drop tune an whole tone. I have more than enough slack as it is.

Try it. The thing with these modifications is its all 'trial and error'. It may suit you or you may think its crap, give it a try.

That is the essence of old Fender guitar designs. There truly is no standard set up, you are faced with several options and you have to find which suits you best.

True, you just get a drill or router out to change the set up. Although, ironically, the Tele which is the oldest Fender guitar gets changed the least.

i dont see much point in this myself, as while you disable the trem, the bridge is still rocking, so bends, etc still make it go out of tune. and this decreases sustain.

note that this is all theoretical, somebody with more experience may and problably will correct me.

I think when people do this they tape up the bridge posts to stop it rocking. Leaving enough bridge clean so that the connection to earth is still made.

Is there a better, more durable, option instead of electrical tape to stop it from rocking?

Electrical tape is plenty durable. Replace it every few times you change the strings and you won't have any problems.
