Hey guys, I just got my 78 Mustang, and I am stoked! This thing really is beautiful, and I can't wait to play on it. Here come the issues..
Today I got some new strings for it, and in the process of putting them on, EVERY single string snapped off after about 1/2 a turn on the tuners. I called some friends who know guitars better than I, and they deduced that since all the strings had broke at the tuners, there might be a sharp edge on them. I felt with my finger, and sure enough the edges to the slots of the tuners were a bit knarly. I found a guide online that said you should not file them, or use any sort of abrasive, since it will remove the nickel plating. Instead, use a flat head screwdriver and try to turn it gently to debur it a bit. in trying this, I managed to snap off one half of the slot for a tuner!! After that, I gave up for the night, and decided I might need professional help.
I looked online for replacement tuners, but have had a hard time finding any for this model. I wouldnt mind replacing them all, if I can find some that will fit and look semi-original, but without all the string snapping action of the current tuners.
Here are some pics of the guitar, and of the tuners. help!!
Oh, and if anyone knows a good local shop in the DC metro area, please let me know, guitar center just doesn't cut it 😉
