hello

I would like to make my jag (62 reissue) more suitable for jazz i.e. warmer tone

ive installed a buzzstop and a mustang bridge. i use flatwounds (chrome 11s). what else can i do in regards to:

1) the bridge pickup. i'd prefer a replacement that would not require any modification to the guitar's body. i am considering a JB Jr or a Hot Rail but based on the seymour duncan site, these seem more suitable for rock.

what i'm looking for is a single-coil sized bridge pickup that sounds like (or at least close to) a jazzmaster antiquity II or a p-90 or any other "jazz" pickup. any ideas?

2) pots.

for the bridge pickup, get an alnico two pickup wound extremely hot.

about the pots...

1) how does one go about changing the pots in the lead circuit to 500k ones? sorry, im sure this is a pretty obvious procedure but im clueless about guitar tech

2) was the tone noticeably different with the 500k pots? or could the difference have been achieved just by rolling back the bridge pickup controls with the regular 1meg pots?

yes, when you roll back the tone on the lead circuit, you are lowering the resistance of the pots, so changing them is pointless.

could you mod the rhythm circuit to have both pick ups work when its on? that could help mellow out the bridge tone

im looking for something close to a jazzmaster antiquity 2 or a p-90...something warm, dark, but very clear. the neck pickup does this fairly well, but if possible, i'd like a bridge pickup that has those qualities as well.

im sorry, i cant name any jazz guitarists as a tonal reference. Except for a few vinyl LPs (Inner Mounting Flame, Midnight Blue, Alive!, Idle Moments, Virtuoso) i dont really know much about jazz guitar.

I really dig Nels Cline's sound. Any pickup/pot/whatever mod that can make an AVRI jag sound like that (or close) will do nicely 😀

i am considering a JB Jr or a Hot Rail for the bridge. but the samples ive heard give me the impression these are abit too harsh and cutting rather than mellow. if i cannot find anything else that gives me the sound i want, i will go for either of these single-coil sized humbuckers. if not warm, at least the bridge wont be so bright.

i like that idea of the coil-tap. will google this to see how its done and, if i cant find anything myself, i'll probably bother the kind people here again 😀

yea, most single bridge pickup will be pretty bright. for instance, the seymour duncan hot rails for tele is given a 5 / 9 / 4 eq on the website, but is extremely bright. if your looking for warmer tones in the bridge, id suggest getting something meant for metal or something, with little treble.

ive looked at red lace sensors some time ago. but i cant seem to recall the reason why i ruled them out! hahah! there was something i came across that discouraged me about them. i think i'll take a second look. thanks!

i think short of any single-coil sized pickup that has the characteristics of the neck pup (warm, mellow, clear), i will probably be doing what tragictravisty suggested, which is get a hot, biting, hard-rock pickup like the Hot Rails or JB Jr. im leaning towards the JB Jr. anyone here use this?
