Beginning Mex Duo Sonic proj

hi all, i recently acquired a 1995 mex duo sonic for 150 USD and i will begin working on it probably over winter break. I am planning on doing these things.

1. strip, refinish w/ fiesta red

2. possibly route for a JB

3. replace the pickguard

- I really like the shape of the mustang pickguard and the chrome plate the volume and tone is mounted on, do you guys have any ideas on how i could achieve this on my sonic?

COuld you guys share some experiences with the duo sonix (pros, cons), ideas for my project, tips to help out a newbie?

I've modified Musicmasters before which are almost the same, with the humbucker be aware of the string height. Its a low bridge and neck so its better to cut a neat route in the scratchplate rather than use pickup surrounds, then you can set the pickup lower. Its especially a problem in the neck position.

Before you refin i would place your scratchplate and control plate on the body just to check no filling is needed. I think Mustang control plates go off on more of an angle than some solid plastic MM/Duo scratchplates.

Nice to see someone else is doing a MIM Duo project!

I've just gotten my MIM Duo back that I lost years ago (turns out it has bounced around and ended up in my brothers basement ready to be thrown away) and am wanting to do something close to what you're talking about. I'll put a bucker in the bridge but am thinking of a warmer tone for up front maybe a blue lace style but still not sure on that.

Keep us updated on this cause...well if I could learn from any of your mistakes it will free me up to make others 😉

What are you planning on doing for a neck replacement?

im not really sure about the neck yet, i am completely new to this, figured it would be fun and ive always wanted a mustang but am too cheap 😆 always open to suggestions - ModNuB PM me with info on ur proj.

Hi Fran, do you know the best way i could make a paper template to work with of a mustang ir duo pickguard?

Get one of the guys here to draw you one out, postage wont be much. If someone has a spare Stang plate its a 5 minute job, i'd do you one but mines all wired up on the guitar.
