ive been wanting to build a body from scratch, so no body blanks from warmoth or the like. so i went to the local home depot to see what kind of wood they have that i could build with. and i when i got there i saw they have poplar, which is the same wood as the 65 ri stangs. the only issue is that it is too thin and to acheive the right thickness two planks would have to be sandwiched and glued together. and then matched with another sandwich piece as it is not wide enough either. so aside from having a not so pleasing grain pattern, is there anything wrong with doing it this way?

You'd need to be pretty careful doing it like that. You wouldn't want to stick it together and finish your guitar and everything and find that the two pieces have shifted! That's not good. You'd have to buy the wood, and leave it for a while, so it settles. Then start work sticking etc and probably leave it again to settle. This is provided the two pieces are extremely flat and havn't warped. etc. etc. etc.

Personally I'd keep an eye out for a single piece that could be used 😉

okay thanks for the advice, thats what i had worried about. and as for one piece i could use, the store can be pretty limited with the thickness of woods like this, most are 1/2 or 3/4 of an inch. maybe i could have them order some

Yeah, it's woth a shot. It is always best to try get a solid piece of wood to make a body from.

hopefully they will have the resources to get it, otherwise im stuck with tht 70-85 dollar warmoth blanks. and thats totally the last resort.

You have other options, dude. I get my body blanks (alder, poplar & mahogany) from Anawalt Lumber in Burbank. Home Depot *never* carries the right stuff. You're gonna want a 1 3/4" x 12" x 20" blank. The mustang's width, however, is 1 1/2", so you'll need to have it planed down. Just call around to some local lumber yards and see what they have.

OH! I didn't realize you are in Valencia! Right now, Anawalt in Burbank has the *EXACT* wood you need and you shouldn't pay anymore than $25-30 for it.

i think im actually fine with the extra thickness and it wouldnt really be an issue.
