The way I imagined the process is to sand back the current finish, spray, allow to dry, repeat process several times. How long to dry, how many coats? Is spray paint a good idea?
Two other things are, suggestions for colours (I really have no thoughts on colour yet), and I would also like to add a comp stripe (just for fun). How is this done?

By the way, I am not massively concerned if I wreck the guitar, because I strongly suspect Santa is bringing me another Telecaster for Christmas...
I was not a telecaster lover, but I bought a 2004 body on ebay & it went form there, several necks later, its almost a dream guitar. I didn't get into the repainting because I thought the honey blonde transparent finish looked pretty cool, but I experimented with pickups, guards & necks. The finished result included a 2007 maple neck with jumbo frets & 70's re-issue headstock decal,I thought I would not like the jumbo frets, but it feels like a Gibson with those installed, a black guard & modern bridge plate, a pre-wired top quality control plate & knobs, with a Seymour Duncan little 59 mini humbucker in the bridge position & a Seymour Duncan quarter pound for tele in the neck position, both bargains off ebay, & it wails as much as you like, a great fun guitar, that plays like a dream, see the pic below, it looks good enough to eat for me !
If you go for the re-paint, trust Aug & go careful, remember that the ground work is the key, get all the cracks & knocks filled & sanded & the rest will be easy.
