Problem with J.S. Neck

I recently bought a used JagStang and there seems to be a slight twist (not a bow) in the neck around the 6th-8th fret. Is there any way to take a twist out of a neck? Or do I need to invest in a replacement neck for my Jagstang? It is just enough to make the lower E string buzz on the 6th-8th frets.

There is no way *anyone* on here can answer that question definitively. You really need to take it in to a guitar repair shop and let a luthier have a look at it. Some necks develop a slight twist and still manage to work just fine (with proper adjustments, mind you) and some can be repaired by having the fretboard leveled, re-radiused and refretted. I wouldn't do the latter on anything but an irreplaceable neck. Besides, you should be able to find a JS neck on ebay for less than $200.

ive only seen 1 JS neck on ebay, and it was a guy from SS that was selling it.

Ok, let me rephrase...you should be able to find a 24" scale Fender neck on ebay.

Whilst Aug is partly right there are ways of straightening a neck using cramps and heat, even steam in extreme cases but i doubt your neck is that bad unless a previous owner has done something careless like left the guitar leaning against a radiator for a long period of time. These are repairs for an experienced technician and not something us average guys would carry out on here or most forums, even if we have an idea how.

If you do look for a replacement, a Jaguar, Mustang, Bronco, Duo or Musicmaster neck will fit fine so dont feel limited to a JS neck.

I'd say, check the cost of repair w/ a luthier, then check that versus the cost of a neck off ebay or Warmoth.

yup, i want a JS neck, cuz they have a SUPER thin nut width

thanks all for the replies and info. I will also upload a pic of my jagstang but the twist is so slight that you can't tell it by looking at it, however, it does effect the playability enough to make me put it back down.

Uh...what are you talking about? 95% of all Fender 24" scale necks are B width. The other 5% are A width and 22.5" (Generally speaking, of course)

A width = 1 1/2"

B width = 1 5/8"

Is there any difference between J-Stang necks and (jap) Mustang necks? Didn't Kurt give Fender one of his necks to copy? Are we just getting a watered down version with Mustang necks? Or I guess they could have switched the japanese mustang necks to jag-stang proportions to save on production costs (but I seriously doubt it)

I'm working on a project Mustang using an "A" width '65 neck on a natural 70's body, tortishell guard, SD tele alnico 2 pro in the neck and chrome JB in the bridge...the usual suspects for hardware except Gotoh 510 locking turners. Just waiting on the pickguard in the mail.

Its A width but 24 inch scale (a freak neck according to Aug)

yeah, i know but i thought the JS nut width was slimmed down a tad

it very well could have been, but I have seen a huge inconsistancy with nut height in the last 12 years I have been looking at Fender guitars.

My first (real) Fender guitar I bought was a Deluxe Powerhouse Strat ('98), and I have had many (guitar tech) people/friends ask me who set up my nut. FENDER DID!!! It's factory, and it looks better than any other factory Fender I have come across in the last 10 yrs!!! I don't know if it was a fluke, or an example shown to the factory workers, but my guitar's nut was shaved and set to a level that I still havn't seen repeated except on $2000+ range Custom Shop Strats (which has blown me away FYI). My Jag-Stang didn't have this level of detail to it's nut, nor did my buddy's American Deluxe Strat (which pissed him off... but,... he did buy his online...) All I'm saying is that you never know what yr getting unless you buy it firsthand and can inspect the damn thing. I lucked out on the nut on my Strat (BIG TIME!!), but my JS had a rather lousy type nut height that I had to shave down and adjust the truss rodd, etc....(which sucked... (BIGTIME!!!!)).

Overall, I can't say #### for what the Jag-Stang's inital height was or is. I can say that only 2 to 3 (or more) companies in Japan have manufactured this guitar (for the masses) and we ultimately don't know what the height was supposed to be... unless we can measure the originals!! Those are now currently in the hands of REM and the Fender museum. We would need those to make a "proper" measurement. Otherwise, find an old '65 Jag and make measurements, and hope for the best....
