Mustang Neck Profile Differences

I'm thinking of getting a Mustang. I once had a Jag-Stang and loved the slimness of the neck, therefore I assumed all mustang type guitars have the smae neck slimness. However, theother day I went to my local music shop and they had a new mexican mustang and the neck profile felt much thicker.

My question:

Do the thickness of Mustang reissue necks vary throughout the years or origin of manufacture.

Or could I be just imagining this?

i didnt think the made mexican stangs, but aside from that its probably a b width neck

Are you sure it was a Mustang? I'm guessing it was a MIM Duo-Sonic, and yes, those necks are a bit thicker.

I'm sure it was a Mustang..... sonic blue....... it probably was a Japanese version then.

I thought they made mexican version because they started selling them on Musicanfriends.com and I thought that the website did not sell Japanese Fenders.

Anyhow, this particular neck, which was a 2008 Mustang model, had a thicker profile than an early 90's Jag-Stang that I had. It got me fustrated because it seems like with Fenders they love making FAT necks now a days, and there is nothing that I hate more than a fat neck on a fender.

Now this particular Mustang had the 24' scale, but as I mentioned it's just the profile seemed fatter than the Jag-Stang I had......... are all Japanese mustang and jagstang necks the same, or would they vary?

For some reason, Fender seem to like variety in their neck profiles.

I have 3 Squiers, a Jagmaster, a 51, and a Telecaster, and each neck has a vastly different feel. The Jagmaster has an extra 1mm width, great satin finish and the obvious shorter scale. The 51 is also satin-finished (but not as smooth as the Jagmaster, and not tinted either), but is a VERY thick and chuncky neck. My Telecaster feels perfect, except for a gloss finish.

As for Mustangs and Jag-Stangs, I have no idea. I'm just making a general observation here...

Are we talking about profile thickness or the width of the nut here? 60's necks were certainly not *identical* if we are discussing the variances of a 1/100th's of an inch, but all in all they were the same. I'm fully aware that the profiles DO vary from factory to factory, and the Mexican factory(ies) do tend to make them beefier. I'm not debating this at all. Where I'm getting confused is this: Mexico is producing Mustangs?

I can see how someone who's not terribly familiar with shortscale Fenders could mistake a Duo-Sonic with a Mustang, and I simply made that query. With all that said, IF Mexico were producing the Mustang, I wouldn't *at all* be surprised to find that they have a beefier neck.

Well I could be wrong about them being made in Mexico.... I just thought the '65 reissues were made in Mexico because Musicanfriend.com is selling them and I thought that Japanese Fenders were not sold on that that website.... or any American dealer for that matter.

Also, I am talking about both the width of the nut and thickness of the neck..... both were bigger than the Jag-stang's and I was very disappointed.

I don't know why I sold that Jag-Stang.... it had the best neck ever...... ergfggggggg!!!!1

I think Fender is trying to thicken the necks so that they have a marketing ploy. I honestly love my squier Bullet strats neck. It's smooth and thin with a nice finish too.

I saw a Bullet strat (a 2008) in the store the other day. Just a display model, but the side of the fretboard around the first few frets was really worn and pale, almost like it was maple painted rosewood colour. Next time I am there I will take a close look, because I thought it was very odd. Is there a variety of rosewood known to do that? I think I read somewhere that Bullets use Brazillian rosewood, if that makes a diff...

can't be...brazilian rosewood is close to impossible to get. Some rosewoods can be as light in color as maple, btw. It's not all dark brown.

I must have heard wrong. It was odd... normal rosewood colour, but worn away to reveal a maple colour underneath. It was a pretty big turn-off actually...

It's not a shop where I am too eager to do business. Case in point: In Australia, the rrp for a Squier Bullet is $199. This store has them for $219. Billy Hyde's has them for $149. Hmm, I wonder where I would go...😉

some stores are sneaky, they bank on customers not checking prices. ask them if they match prices. any smart retailer will say yes. for instance, rt7 up where i live had the dd7 up for 180usd (it retails for 160), they matched the price, and because i was banking on them taking travelers checks, i was 4 short w/tax, so they took a few off. just be smart and dont let them intimidate you. or just flat out say 'bill hyde's has this guitar for 149$' and see what he says.

The worst they can say is that they won't match it, in which case I simply go to the place that is cheapest. As long as a Bullet is post-2007, it should be ok.

I'm not buying one, anyways, it was just an example I wanted to put out there. I don't even remeber why 😀

I would guess that neck shapes will vary slightly, even with modern machining techniques in Mexico or Japan.

I have a few vintage mustangs & vintage necks for projects, most are around the same profile, but each is very slightly different & the odd one is chunkier, I have a 65 slab board with a brazilian rosewood board & its a very chunky D profile, much thicker than all the rest, I think its a left over jag neck used for a mustang, also a 72 neck that is a thicker profile. The different widths will make the necks feel different as well.

I also have several 80's USA Bullets with the telecaster neck, all of the necks are slightly different, some of them are a very chunky D profile & some a really slim C shape, which I prefer.

Although vintage Fender guitars were mass produced, most necks were hand finished, so the profiles will be slightly different.

Out of all my guitars the best neck belongs to an 87 Squier Bullet, its a really slim C profile, comfy & plays like butter, I prefer the slim necks like you.

Saying that I just got a maple tele neck with satin finish & chunky frets its quite thick but feels & plays great, I guess its all in the feel of the thing.
