So, my friend recently gutted his beloved 1965 Mustang to make some drunken changes in the "laboratory." Vintage enthusiasts take note before organizing a lynching. The guitar had already been to hell and back when he purchased it and none of the wiring was original. That being said...
He replaced the DiMarzio pickups (stacked single-coil sized humbuckers with "PATENT APPLIED FOR" stickers on the underside) with the single coils from a (Mexican) 1993 Fender Duo-Sonic reissue. Controlled by a three-position toggle switch with one volume and no tone, this setup works pretty well for him. A Fender rep told him that these particular pickups were specially made for the Duo-Sonic reissue and that they were pretty much "hot rodded strat pups." Has anybody else messed around with these pickups? What were your opinions?
