acoustic guitars

well, i had a go on my dads ozark acoustic and decided i want one for myself.

now i dont know a whole lot about these things so i'm wondering if anyone here can give me pointers on what to look out for.

i get it that the bigger the body space the bassier the sound but thats about it, i don't know anything about how different woods affect the build,tone, quality etc of the guitar.

i'd like something smallish with a cutaway and a built in pickup for about

Well, Takamine guitars are the bee's knees, but in the last decade they discovered that if they raised prices, people will still pay. Also, I've had really great luck with Rogue guitars, but haven't kept up with them in years. About 4 years ago, I bought a 000 style acoustic from them with Herringbone binding for $99 and I <3 that guitar. Outside of that, I have no idea...

look for mid 80's to late 80's fender newporters/malib's

they have solid tops(hlp back and sides) with good tuners(mostly later modles) for about 200 bucks on ebay.

mine wierdly enough has a solid back and top, but, hlp sides(2 ply me thinks)

depends on the sound your looking for if you want a bassy with a single note "punch" guit Id say look at fenders or ibanez. if you want something more shimmery with constant overtones and sparkle out the a$$ go for somethin like a martin. if you dont know what you want just try every guit in your price range until you play one and something clicks and tells you its for you. there are always diamonds amongst the sand of mass produced guitars. I got a sweet nylon string acoustic for 80$ it doesnt even have a name but its tone will turn your head and it plays like a dream. good luck

As an acoustic player myself I'd have to say that in in that price range you best bet is the used market. Just play as many as you can and you'll know yours when you find it.

theres no changing an acoustics tone, so make sure its what your after.epiphone and fender both make good low end stuff, but make sure you get a good one, some are horrible

well a second hand shop down my way has a 12 string (11 at the moment) for 130 pounds with one little ding on the headstock, other than that it looks good, i'll have to get a feel of it if it doesnt get sold and i'll trade my old amp for it if it feel good.

not everyday a 12 string turns up for 130.

I've got one of their student classical guitars - the "Wolf". You can tell it's been done on a budget but it's a triumph. An absolute dream for 95 quid and it came with a stand, music stand, hard case and tuner in the price. He even drilled me in some strap buttons free of charge. Worth WAY more than what I paid I think.

I always wanted one of those really curvy acoustics, like the one you see Robert Johnson holding. I think they call them "parlour-sized", but don't hold me to that...

yep, i really love my lo-fi parlour, they are just great to carry around, and i don't mind the compromise i might make sound-wise. i like that they are more quiet, too.

a lot of the parlour guitars around are full-scale, which i don't really understand, if i want a small guitar, i want short scale as well.

Yeah, don't get an Ovation. They are expencive and over-rated. I'm not a fan of the bowl back on guitars, it seems to make them really uncomfortable, especially sitting down.

I am really into Martins i have a 000-28 but thats a wee bit out of your price range but they do make great sounding cheaper guitars also just a personal note i really want a gibson j-45

Yeah I had a Martin D35 for years but gave it to my little brother. Now I've got a gibson songwriter & LOVE it, its a "little" out of your range.

If you can find an epiphone PR5 they are great acoustics. Comfortable, play really well & have a great pickup so if you want to play live you can.
