Whats better a stock jag or jazz

Recently a Red Hot Chili Pepper fan told me that "jaguars > jazzmasters" I assume its because there a Frusciante worshiping fool and don't really that Jaguars aren't that great stock where Jazzmasters are a little better, so I thought I'd start a poll what does the ultimate short scale forum think!

I went with Jazzmaster. I've always liked Jazzmasters better than Jaguars for some reason...

Jazzuar. Personally, I like the brighter sounding Jaguar PUPs, but both are really nice.

I like single coils better than p90's so jag gets my vote.

For me, it's sorta apples and oranges in a way. 2 completely different pickups and different scales. With that said, however, my choice? Jazzmaster. Hands down the winner.

I'm not voting, they're both brilliant guitars.

The Jazzmaster Pickups are NOT P90s. They are extra-wide single coils, similar to those you would find on a lap / pedal steel.

Even if they did, a p-90 IS a single coil pickup anyway...

I thought Under the Bridge was a strat. I might have to listen again, haven't heard the song in ages...

The stock Jazzy pups are marginally better than the stock Jags so i would say Jazzy. Other than that, like Aug said its apples and oranges.

Aye, little known fact, surprised me when I saw it too. I can't seem to find where I read it now, but I clearly remember it, a '67 Jazzy. They were recording the album in Rick Rubin's mansion in the hollywood hills, and the guitar, not actually one of Frusciante's, was just in the room at the time, and he'd been playing about with it and decided to use it because of how mellow it came out in recording. But he doesn't tend to use them. Truth be told he doesn't really tend to use Jaguars, he only owns two, a white '66, and a fiesta red '63 which he ocassionally uses live, but generally uses as to warm up before going on stage.

As you can probably tell, I love the man, I even have him tattooed on my back lol. Can't wait for my copy of The Empyrean to arrive. 😁

why just as a warm up? does he prefer it but find strats more reliable?

Maybe he likes it, but the short scale is only useful to him as a warm up, and a Jazzy is too weighty?

Might like the sound of strats better. Maybe more versatile.

Certainly less prone to feedback than a Jazzy, don't know if the sam applies to Jags.

My vote goes to the Jaguar for the following reasons....

- Tailpiece and Bridge placement is a little better (i.e., closer)

- I like the bridge pickup sound more from default, which is the pickup I use the most

- Strangle Switch comes in handy for those Reggae/Police/Thin-Down tone moments

- Easier to find more of, I have not yet seen a single Reissue Jazzmaster of any kind in any shops locally in over 10 years, but all the warehouse shops have em'

- I tend to like the harmonic richness of the 24" scale more

- The separate control plates make upgrades/part replacements a piece of cake, I don't even have to remove the strings or at the least un-tune them.

However, the Jazzmaster has some huge merits as well, and I hope to get one in my collection before too long....buy or build...that is the question

- My favorite Neck Pickup of any Neck Pickup...EVER

- 25.5" Scale suits itself well to tuning down low (higher string tension)

- 3-Way switch makes pickup selection on the lead circuit easier

- Neck options are easier as it shares the same scale as the more popular Strat and Tele

- Bigger overall sound due to the larger pickups
