I think that it could be the angle of the photo, the black dots are cool though. I don't think he did much modding, he changed the pickups in one of his Jazzmasters to some P90's with metal covers, and he wrapped tape around the tremolo arm to give it more height/travel so he could use it while he strummed, but that's about it. I think Bilinda put something under the strings behind the bridge to stop the ring, so there's a strong possibility Kevin did that too.
