problem with ringing

I don't know terminology, so bear with me here.

The problem is with my 51 and my Tele, but my 51 especially.

When soloing in the realm of the 12th fret on the treble strings, A and low E will vibrate and ring on their own unless I mute them with my thumb. The problem is worst on the 51 to the point of being distracting. Not so bad on the Tele, but still there.

Maybe it's a coincidence, maybe not, but both of the guitars are hardtails, strung through the rear of the bridge. The Jagmaster does not have this problem, and I don't play my strat, so I don't know there.

What are my options for getting rid of this problem, because it's really making me not want to play my 51 at the moment ☹

its called sympathetic harmonics, and the only thing you can do is have it extremely out of tune (not recommended) or mute the strings. try using the palm of your picking hand, thats the usual way people do it.

As far as the 51 goes, would swapping on a new briidge be an option? I know people have been using those tri-brass-barrelled ones alot on the 51.

no, not really. besides, all a 3-saddle bridge would do in that respect is increase interaction between strings. To be honest rob, this is a problem with your technique.

If that's the case, then it's only a technique problem on one of four guitars I own at the moment.

But yeah, reading about this elsewhere, it seems to be a nightmare of a problem to try and get rid of. No one seems to have concrete answers except 'change your style'.

Kind of a bummer, because it (the problem) is really getting to be a major annoyance.

yeah, soundslike he's describing overtones, to me anyway. i like overtones, personally.

you do know everything i guess. and its only a technique problem on one guitar because certain guitars are more harmonically active than others. anybody who could play guitar would consider a well coupled bridge, and harmonically active body/neck a plus. you can either sacrifice tone by finding a way to remove sustain and top end from your guitar, really mess up your intonation, or learn how to play guitar.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the 51 being your only non string through body guitar... Don't know how it would, just throwing it out there.

The Telecaster and 51 have greater sustain because they don't have vibratos (they're stop-tail units, I presume). Therefore, when you hit a note, it resonates longer inside the body, resulting in more emphasized sympathetic drones...

what cymaster said. an acoustically resonant, loud, sustaining guitar will have the greatest amount of sympathetic harmonics. On acoustics, a loud singer can even cause sympathetic harmonics if you dont mute.

I've come to accept that it's just a natural thing, but yes, both the Tele and the 51 have top loading bridges.

I'm starting to try playing with my hand resting on the bass strings, but when I did lessons briefly 10 years ago, this technique was not mentioned to me. So I'm trying to break a long time of entrenched habit. At least it gives me something to work on.

However I still find it tough to believe that swapping hardware (ie: neck, bridge) will not solve the issue. Not that I am planning to do this, but still...
