hated that too, therefore i used to double the G (two bronze wound .023's). you might have to do some minor filing on the nut for that.
of course you can experiment a bit, you can try an unwound G of the same pitch (like an .018) mhm or you can (i think that s the way it s done on ricks) put the wound string on top and the octave string below, which might sound better when strumming, but i never tried that.
