I'd say your best bet for that low a price is one of those handheld mixers/recorders and a mic

just so you know that one doesnt come with a condensor mic.

I have a cable which means i can plug the firewire into my laptop

Yeah but the mic on the USB set is better but the mixer is not quite as good, but weeee shall seeee

I'm a little over your ceiling, but my current rig is:

But I picked up the DP-02 and the mic used from Ebay and Pawnshop. I need to get a better mic for the amp though - the mic is a pretty good vocal/acoustic mic, but I worry about hurting it with the amp. With that said, I've had decent luck running guitars direct into the DP-02 through my pedal chain, and then using the audio out to my cabinet to get good results and using the input levels on the DP-02 to keep from overloading the inputs.

I'm really happy with this setup for my current needs.

My band's recording setup for vocals and drums:

Some mics we borrowed -> An old mixing board that was on loan to us for about a year and a half -> 1/4" to 1/8" adaptor -> Computer mic input -> Audacity

Setup for guitar and bass:

Amp -> 1/4" to 1/8" adaptor -> Computer mic input -> Audacity

This didn't cost us a dime (other than what we spent on stuff like amps that we needed anyways). The vocal setup was a pain to get together, but for just guitar stuff all you need is a 25-30 watt amp (these produced the best results for me but lower wattage amps work too) with a headphone jack, a 1/4" to 1/8" adaptor, and a computer with Audacity (it's a free download google it). You probably already have the computer and the amp and the adaptor is like $3 (I got mine for free from a friend).
