amp building

had an idea; since my processor provides 100% of my amp end needs all i would need otherwise is literally a speaker in a box.

so that got me to thinking it cant be that hard to assemble a homemade amp, just a box with a big bastard speaker and a power router and a volume knob, basic joinery and electrics really.

anybody got expericence in this field? tell me what you know.

Built a cab once.

Just get a box, shove a speaker in a box with a solid state PA power amp on top and then just plug the processor into the back of the power amp and you have yourself a power amp

cabs: you'll find plans for thiele boxes on the web, that s a 1x12" cab that s supposed to have the sound of a bigger cab.

anyone got any good cab building links which actually explain it all?

Funnily enough I had one

But just build a box, put a speaker in and then do wiring

google for "thiele box plan" or sth. similar, you will find loads of threads w/ pics. there is an original plan somewhere on electrovoice.com, here's another one:

(the EV speakers are kind of special, so i don't know in how far these are perfect for normal guitar speakers. you might still want to give it a try.)

explain the whole power amp pre amp thing to me.

i'm figuring that power amps are the bit with either the transistors or the valves that increase the electric output and the pre amp is the bit with the knobs that creates the tone, which bit comes first i'm not sure, presumably the pre amp cause my processor is what creates the tone, but then again if i plug my processor into an amp then whatever wattage the amp is it gets multiplied by the 5w or the procrssor, so its a power and a pre amp?

power-amp - drastically increases output, typically no tone-shaping done, except that is naturally induced by tube type, etc.

pre-amp - raises level to a decent level for final amplification, in addition to giving the power-amp a low impedance signal, tone-shaping

Is it possible to seperate the preamp section from the power section in a head amp?

yea, thats what series effects loops are. if it doesn't have one, its just one wire to snip

Aww, alchemists have parallel fx loop >.<

But I'll give that a try....or rather just use crocodile clips so I don't void the warranty with line 6

well if you want to drive something else with the alchemist preamp, that does just fine.

I'd probably wire in a temporary jack to it so I can put it straight into a mixer for youtube vids. also I could put it into the hifi I'm using at the moment

Means I can get some awesome tones without blowing the house down 😎

Also could I run a tube head amp into hifi speakers? I wouldn't be cranking it

a parallel effects loop will work fine as an output for the alchemist preamp, and yes you can use hifi speakers.

And how about disconnecting the power section? I heard you are not supposed to run that without speakers

well you can use it without speakers, but you need to wire a resistor to ground...

A high power resistor right? do you just mean a resistor instead of a speaker?
