'69 RI or '65RI purchase issue (w/ pics)

Hi everyone, new member but old reader here...

I'm finnaly about to purchase a Mustang (the need is t high) but I have 2 options:

1. for 450

I'd say definitely go for the '69 RI. Every '65 RI I've played has been a disappointment compared to my '69 RI. If the neck is a bit bent it can be straightened up (probably just with the truss rod). And the fretboard could probably use a bit of lemon oil, to bring out the grain...

Plus its practically half the price... 😉

I'd go for the 69. I'm a fan of both but with the price I'd go for the cheaper 69 so you can get a proper setup & then do whatever you want to it. Also you don't eat the new Fender price increase.

The 69s have the belly/arm contour too which are nice. I have a duo/tele without & a couple strats & an old ovation preacher with & while I don't miss them on the duo/tele they are nice on the others. As for fretboard colour they all very a lot but can be oiled to darken up if you prefer. The neck on one of my strats was really light & w/ just a little "fret butter" oil it now looks nice & rich.

Which ever you get keep us updated.

Yeah, I forgot to say, I like my '69 RI better than pretty much every other guitar I've ever played 😉 (Except my dad's friend's 1968 Gibby 335 which is purely incredible... But it is close between the two)

Got her...

So thanks to everybody's advice on here.

Except for the chipped off paint on the back she's in perfect condition.

Restrung her with 10-49's but have only played here yet for little time but like the sound/feel already.

Great sounding neck pickup (might change out the bridge after a while...dunno yet)

Necksize/fretwork are excellent. Thought the fretboard would be lightcolored for my likings but it's dark enough for me. Also love the look of that big headstock.

I don't know yet if I keep the color (is kinda too yellow for my taste) or repaint it in white or blue-ish. Anyway the brown tort pickguard is gonna go for a red one anyway. Then I'll see how the bodycolors comes out with it.

What is to be the best place to buy a matching red (tortoise, swirl or normal??) pickguard ???

Oh, serialnr. is R029580 so I suppose it's build in 2002 ?

Congratulations! The yellow definitely grows on you (I have one the same colour) And you get used to it, even grow to like it!

The pickups are probably the only weak point on these guitars... Like you say, the bridge one isn't too great, but they suffice.

Thanks. It's not that yellow so it's ok.

I like this pickguard color more with blue but the red looks kinda hot with this 'vintage white'

So 2 little questions:

1. But where to find a red swirl/tortoise pickguard for it that fit's ???

2. And does the white pickup cover fits over a JB jr.

(if not I'm gonna put in a full size humbucker)???

P.S.: She's a real good player and was in a stand in the livingroom and I watched her more then the TV...she's so sexy under candlelight I coudn't stop watching her

(wife was asleep so I could get away with it 😎 )

Ok. In answer to your 2 questions...

1. I'd try WD Music, that's where I got a new one for mine from. They are good there.

2. No. It is my belief that the jb jr. is the same width as the outside of the pickup case on there already.

I have a full sized humbucker on mine and it sounds (and looks) great. I used a Jag-Stang scratchplate instead of butchering my Mustang one (I got the JS plate from WD). It's definitely do-able if you have some routing skills/experience.

So, beside the routing under the guard (will be no problem) a Jag-stang pickguard should fit (the screwholes) a '69 RI Mustang?

No, the pickguard is not a direct fit I'm afraid. There are a couple of bits that need sawn/sanded to make it fit right. Even then you'll still need to drill new holes...

But yeah, the Jagstang pickguard, though it looks the same, is a different shape to the Mustang one.

Sorry for asking another question but where do I order a red tortoise guard that will fit my '69 RI without redrilling wholes?

(edit: just saw the advice for WD Music above...so that 'll fit my '69 RI I guess??)
