1967 Mustang question

Hello everybody,

I bought my Mustang in 73 for $35.00. It was my first "real" guitar and the one that I can say is the reason I still play today. The body finish was removed when I purchased it and I had it refinished with a black lacquer around 1980. Unfortunately, I had the tuners replaced and I didn't keep the originals. (What a moron.) Anyway, I bought a Gibson 335 in 1980 and the Mustang has basically been in the closet for almost 30 years. I started playing bass in the early 80s so the Mustang was really off my mind. I never thought it was worth much until I saw one on ebay for around $1000.00. That motivated me to pull it out, clean it up, and just check it out. I was amazed that it actually plays and sounds good.

I have a few of questions. There is quite a lot of 60 cycle buzz when it's cranked and most goes away when I touch the control panel where the pots and input jack reside. Is there supposed to be a ground wire connected to the cover?

Another question I have is regarding the tuners. Would it be worth it to replace the tuners with a vintage set? The ones currently on it are probably better and have a Fender logo, but the screw holes don't match. I'd also like to get it as close to original as possible. (I still haven't found the tremolo bar, but I know it's around somewhere.)

Is their much value lost because I don't have the original finish on the body? Should that weigh into my decision of the tuners?

Refinishes always reduce value but I'm sure tuners don't matter that much as long as they are in the same style. Guitarfetish.com sell vintage style 6 on a plate tuners that should fit perfectly. But if you want to go vintage, thats fine. I suppose non matching hardware would look a bit odd.

Thanks for the reply. I think I'll go the route of current inline tuners. It's supposed to have the F tuners, but I don't think I want to pay big $.

I went home at lunch and looked through my "kid" box. Stuff that I still have from my early years. Found the tremolo bar. 😀

I'll have to take some pics and post them.

i have a '67 and there is a ground wire that goes in between the control plate and the closest bridge post, hope that helps!

Thanks, I'll have to check that out. I had something rigged on top of the body that didn't look too cool which I removed. I'll try running a wire through the body.
