Red Competition Mustang

I love the look of the red competition mustang with matching headstock, but something seems fishy about this listing. It says it is a 68 mustang which is not possible since the competition mustang did not come out until 69. The seller says it is 100% original. After I asked he checked the date on the neck and posted the picture. It is hard to see in the picture, but it is dated as september 66. How is this possible?

Actually, 68 was the first year for the competition Mustang. And "but it is dated as september 66." It would be hard to refinish a 66 neck to look like that.

It looks original.

Thanks for the help. I didn't really think it was a refinish, but I thought it was pretty odd that the neck was from 66.

it probably is not a refinish like you guys have said but an old stock neck that was made in 66 and then painted to match a body in 68', i bet that happened a lot because of the student guitar marketing, and because of fenders somewhat odd dating systems

I was thinking about that. I've seen comp stangs with Klusons, with different colored logos and left over necks like you said.

Yeah, chances are that fender made the neck in 66 but did not put it on anything until they made that compstang.

So I ended up buying this guitar. I received it yesterday and so far I love it. It is easy to notice that the pickguard has shrunk a bit. I am considering taking it off and buying a replacement and I wanted to know what you guys think about this. If I do replace it what color should I get? I am thinking of just getting another white pearl that is made to look aged, but what about red tort?

If it's original, keep it that way. Glad you like it though, post some pics if you can.

I like how it looks now I'm just not sure if it will continue to shrink and end up causing problems. I'll try to get some pictures up soon.
