tragictravisty i use d'addario's, and compile this set:11 14 18 32 42 58-60on the bottom string, i often have to use a different brand, but i'll start ordering myself this week. also, that pu probably has the blood of a small child in it...
Geeto67 so I strung up the d'adds and what a glorious mess I have made. I didn't realize it before but the nut on my neck is so worn out that it comes to a very pronounced v in the middle. The G string is resting on the first fret and has a horrible buzz. I am still fiddling with the bridge but it looks like I might just have to replace the nut before continuing. ugh.
jacksonjackass Get a pro to do it man.Even I wouldn't tackle a nut job (maturity please 😛 ) and I'm pretty daring as far as mods and repairs go
EvilPandaDog Replacing the nut was the most easiest task in the world. I just smashed it with a hammer and placed the new one in with some glue.
jacksonjackass Yeah, but If you plan on slotting the damn thing and doing a decent job of it....Also the curvature at the bottom of the nut will be a problem... but there are ways around it
Geeto67 yeah.....I think I am going to have a pro do this for the moment, but hopefully he'll let me watch him do a nut job 😛 and I will then be less intimidated for next time. I can do a lot of things on a guitar but this seems like one of those seemingly simple things that ends up with me crying with a hammer in one hand and a splintered neck in the other.
jacksonjackass Watching him would be a great idea. Make a note of the tools he uses too and don't forget to post how he did it here 😉Don't smash it with a hammer. On a guitar with a glued on headstock, you could smash off the headstock. Even on a fender headstock, you'd bash a fret or tuner or break the thing.
