Looking for a Mustang style guitar but I'm poor.

I've got a bit of time before I buy something so I'll go to some guitar shops to play some different scales and what not. And yes I was refering to the acoustic, I didn't know the scales weren't different.

Get a Stratocaster and a Capo, Tune it a Whole step down, place the capo on the second fret. It makes the guitar into a 23 inch scale from a 25.5 inch scale. Thanks to the person that suggested I should try a strat and a capo.

You can test it out on a bullet strat. Cheap, and mine seems to be good quality

To the OP. Get a Squier and do some modifications here and there along the way when you can afford to. After the mods you'll have is soundin' kick *%s.

Ya know, all this neck swap talk on the previous page makes me want to try neck swapping with a newer Duo-Sonic. I've noticed the neck used on the Jagmaster is a 21 fret 24" scale conversion neck (I have used 25.5" scale necks on my Jagmaster before, and the 24" on other guitars). I've looked at the Duo and the neck could very well be swappable, but I'd rather try it first, though a 25.5" scale Duo REALLY does not appeal to me.

For what it's worth I've noticed Squiers are pretty hit and miss, but if you get a good one they are absolutely great. I've got two Squiers (A Bullet Strat and an Affinity Strat) that I love to death, but I have played a couple that were pretty bad. I recently played one of the new Squier Duo-Sonics and it didn't do much for me, I found the pickups to be tinny sounding (I was playing through a solid-state Vox DA5, so it might have been the amp, but I don't think so cuz some of the guitars I played sounded absolutely gorgeous through it, particularly the J MASCIS JAZZMASTER) and I also found the neck quite uncomfortable, although it wasn't overly thick... probably just had a profile I'm not used to.

Stuff Squier, they dont even come close to a CIJ Mustang, no where near it in build quality nor sound, Squiers are pieces of junk IMO. I own 1 Squier and its modified but its still junk next to a Jap Mustang and next to my 66 Mustang.

Just save up for a secondhand CIJ Mustang,it will be worth the wait, believe me.

Fender Japan make better Mustang copies then they make Jaguar copies. The Mustang copies are almost 100% whereas the jaguar about the only thing similar to a vintage one is the neck and body shape. Even the sound of the pickups are very similar to my 65 ones on a CIJ (MIJ, makes no difference) Mustang.

2ndhand Mustangs can be had cheap if you scan ebay daily when you have some cash ready.

So you have ONE squier guitar which sucks and from that you say they ALL suck. Thats every guitar made by that company for nearly 30 years 😐

I've owned 2 squiers and played 4. 3 were crap and one of mine was EXCELLENT. Just goes to show that squiers are hit and miss

An opinion is just an opinion, even if it is formed with limited information.

I remeber when I was first looking to buy a Jagmaster and reading reviews on Harmony Central, the amount of people who dropped the old "usually Squier's are terrible, but I must have got one of the good ones" led me to believe that there was a lot of snobbery as well as a lot of good guitars being made by Squier.

One factor with Squier, is that I think there is some quality variance from factory to factory. Both of my Teles and my Jagmaster are from the CY factory (Taiwan, I beileve), and they are just fine. The Jagmaster in particular is just a flawlessly built guitar. I am sure Chinese workers take pride in what they do. If they did bad work, there are many millions of people looking for work who could replace them.

I think the main cost cutting is with the electrical components.

And that's MY opinion... 😉

SO YOU assume I've only ever played one because I only own one? 😲

Of the non vista variety, I've played 3 jagmasters(of which i bought one), 7 strats and 4-5 teles, (never tried a squier bass so I cant comment on them but I am willing to give the bronco bass a fair shot as it looks very cool and priced right.) The teles were better than the jagmaster and strat combined (build wise) IMO however I like offsets and aren't much of a fan of straight waisted guitars, i was trying to give them a go but they didn't take.

So how "hit and miss" it is I cant tell for sure but of the14 or so I've played they all felt cheap. The only reason I bought the jagmaster is cause it sounded good and if a guitar sounds good I can put up with other imperfections easily enough.

So I've played a bunch of them and they are all cheapish feeling, they do sound pretty decent mind you its just the feel of them and craftmanship I have a problem with...there is one exception in the squier line, the made in japan vista series. They are on par with MIJ Fender IMO. And are excellent guitars.

I'm not against cheap guitars, no, in fact I love Epiphone cause they are nice and cheap and decent quality. IMO, the cheaper the better but I also like high quality guitars like anyone would I spose and when your number one guitar is a U.S made vintage 1966 mustang its pretty hard to top that with any budget guitar...

I'm a cheapskate and far from a gear snob, I just like high quality Fenders which I spose makes me biased(everyone is biased in one way or another) towards U.S/Jap Fenders.

I was advising the OP save for a Japanese Mustang because they are one of the highest quality guitar you can get and they aren't expensive, especially 2nd hand ones off eBay.

When I was younger and new to guitar I used to use all budget gear cause I didn't want to wait and save for better gear, in retrospect it was a bad decision and waiting pays off big time.

I played that new Duo-sonic "classic vibe" in the store and was pretty impressed. It needed a set up for sure, the action was high, but the finish and sound were really nice. Seemed very worth the money.

You should go try one out.

Ok so I was pretty much set on the squier duo... Then I thought, 90s FENDER duo must be better... The same line of thought lead me to a mustang reissue. I figure, this is what I want in the long run anyway. But somehow, somehow... i bought an original '76. I'm very confused.

i read an article somewhere, i forget exactly where, but it talked about all of the different brands that came out of some asian factory, and the main difference between the squiers of the world and the shecters is the rejection rate. of course, more expensive hardware and electronics comes with the higher end models. but, this shows that if you are willing to test out a variety of the lower end models, the only difference is the hardware.

If you saw the fretboard and neck on my jagmaster then compared it to my Jap Jaguar you might change your mind on that. The rosewood or whatever it is isn't cut straight the full length of the neck, you would NEVER find this problem on a jap/US jaguar. The fretboard is thicker from the nut to fret 7 or so then it thins out up till the pocket, its just not right. But, cause its a cheap guitar it never bothered me.

Cheaper guitars generally = poorer workmanship and quality control.

The difference between a Jap Jaguar and a US jaguar is only hardware and electronics and finish.

The difference between a squier and a jap Jaguar is everything! The quality of the wood included.

Of course there's some exceptions when squiers were made in japan, they were good back then.
