CIJ Jaguar - P'Ups in Series Conversion

Hi guys, first post here; read a little and loved the community!

I have a 06 Fender CIJ Jaguar, Seymour Duncan Vintage Jazzmaster p'ups all round with Mustang saddles, played through a Orange halfstack (Rocker 30 head, PPC212 OB cab). I play ALL sorts of music, although love the huge warm jazzy tones that can be produced (as is evident by my amp choice).

I have heard about the series modification that basically allows the lead circuit switches to enable the p'ups to run in series, thus, creating a single humbucker style p'up.

I was wondering if any of you guys have done this mod, and if there is any simple wiring diagrams available? I'm still toying with either using the bass cut off to enable series OR using the neck and bridge switches ONLY when both are in the OFF position. I am edging toward the latter as, I am right in thinking, that then I won't lose any previous tone/sound obtainable from the Jag? (All switches functional, just obviously not able to "kill switch" all output).

Grabbed this from another forum. Works well--you can have all the possibilities with two pickups with the three switches. It actually is easier to do with a CIJ as the bridge pup ground is wired directly to the volume pot-desolder and run the wire to the switch cavity. You might need to add an extension to the ground wire as I did. Both pups in series increases the volume substantially.

EXCELLENT, this was exactly what I was looking for Chip thank you!

So in laymans terms, having the bridge p'up on and the neck off will only activate the bridge and vice versa, but ONLY when BOTH are OFF then it is series? Exactly perfect! Will the bass cut switch also function whilst in series? i.e. cutting the bass? I can't imagine what that would be like! Who needs a 'kill switch' anyway, that's what volume is for!

What a great mod, adding 2 extra sounds to the already amazing Jaguars repertoire of tones!

Bit of a newbie to guitar wiring here, is there a recommended wire to use for the rewire?

Exactly--when both pup switches are in what would normally be in the "off" position you get both pickups in series. If you follow the top diagram you can keep the bass cut with the cap, if you follow the lower diagram you also add phase switching (like the Mustang) which works both in parallel and in series. This is what I did.

As for wire, purists might say you should use cloth wire, but since this is a CIJ/MIJ job the wire is small-gauge, plastic-insulated anyway. I don't know where you are located, but in the U.S. you can get wire of similar type at Radio Shack. I prefer single-strand wire as it is much easier to solder. I will dig out the camera and try to get a descent photo of how I wired this up and post it--probably sometime in the next day or so. I am up to my eyeballs in bike repair tonight.

No problem Chip, thanK you for the continued help. Could I ask what phasing is? Also I am located in the UK, I shall have a search online, prob use cloth wire if possible as lookng in my switch panel I believe it has been wired with it already!

Phasing is that sort of strangly/quacky sound you get from mustangs and jagstangs. I think its 🤮 but you might like it.

I think it happens when you are using two pickups in parallel but one of them has hot and ground reversed but you might want to check a proper wiring diagram.

Just had a look at this youtube video for a further idea, seems to me that phasing OFF seems to give a twangy sound, does this mean that if I do the "humbucking" series mod that it will sound very tinny unless the phasing mod is also done? Surely the bass cut switch does this already?

Forgive me if I am missing the point 😛 Need an detailed explanation 😀

As it says here they should be 'humbucking' when used together already, if this is the case does it pay to do the series mod still? Thanks again.

Here's a photo of this mod as I wired it up (sorry for the poor quality). The bottom of the photo would be the top of the switches (toward the strings). I reversed the top and bottom as compared to the original schematic as I prefer the on in series to be both switches toward the strings, on in parallel toward the bottom edge of the guitar.

Humbucking is independent of series/parallel switching. The pups should be humbucking in series as well. If you chose to include the phase switch, selecting the pups out of phase will cancel the humbucking and produce 60hz (mains) noise as you would get when selecting one pup alone.

You are right also that the out-of-phase sound is not for everyone. It's thinner than one pup alone and is probably not the best choice if you like a heavier/distorted sound. It is certainly interesting if you like clean sounds. Series is great if you like a heavier sound as you are essentially linking the pups as they would be in a single humbucking pup. The beauty of all this is that you can quickly change the wiring if you don't like the results.

The wire you scouted seems fine if you want to have cloth wire throughout the guitar. I would think that this would be more difficult to solder as the space between the contacts on each switch is pretty small. As you can see in the photo, I have made some of the connections with wire completely stripped of insulation as it is easier to solder. Try the cloth-insulated wire and if it doesn't work well, try plastic insulated wire.

I have a CIJ Jaguar, the previous owner put a seymour duncand hot rails pickup on the bridge. Did he had to change the original wiring?

I want to do this mod, but not sure if I can with that different pickup..

Yes you can. Just depends how he wired it.

If he soldered the red and white together, green and bare to ground and black to hot, then there is nothing stopping you
