New duo-sonic project

I recently (as in today) purchased a nineties duo sonic reissue. It is missing the neck pickup, and has had the front and back stripped, but not the sides. I plan to refinish it but I'm not sure what color. Any ideas?

I'd go for mint/surf green...

What color is the pickguard btw? And can you post some pics of it?

If it were mine... I'll turn it into a competition mustangs style scheme.

Body: Lake Placid Blue with Competition Stripes (Sonic Blue).

Neck: Matching headstock color Lake Placid Blue. If you don't mind removing the decals. Losing the orignals forever. If you could get replacement decals it may not matter

FYI re-finishing a guitar will make its lose value if you plan to sell it later. As well tinkering the electronics and any other mods. Buts thats all vintage collector crap.

It isn't a vintage guitar though... The 90s reissues can be picked up pretty cheaply nowadays.

And from what Fred said, the damage to the paintwork is already done. So it is worth refinishing...

I will get pics of it when it arrives, I forgot to get the pictures from the guy. The pickguard is kind of an off white color.

You should definatly do that. Blue compstangs are just the bestez in da worldz. I wish I had a camera or something when I played that 69 stang some years ago ☹

Hey, Fred, congratulations on your new Dousonic. I happen to be refinishing my Mustang right now. I'm partial to natural wood. The headstock and neck are a natural amber finish, so I stripped the body and am using a translucent finish called Fender Neck Amber from Guitar ReRanch (guitarerranch.com).

It's all a matter of personal taste. Look at lots of Mustang pictures as well as at other guitars. The right finish for you will eventually come to you.

I like the way it looks now, just need to smooth out the lines so it's almost an outline of the Duo-sonic

I think I'm going to refin it lake placid blue, that has always been my personal favorite color for mustangs and others like them. So I will most likely be going in that direction

Put up some pics of that mustang Doug I'd like to see that

Yeah I know. I was just giving a rant about Vintage guitars. =)

Thanks to that 90's reissues. I was just thinking about those Duo-Sonic bodies sharing the shape of Mustang's for a project guitar. But it doesn't have the routing necessary to fit a tremolo. If only I could convince myself to settle for a tune-o-matic bridge (just like Kurt's).

Will a Mustang pickguard and control plate fit a Duo-Sonic body?

There are a couple of Duo-Sonic bodies on eBay right now. Supposedly 3 of them are "Vintage" bodies. But it doesn't have any factory date stamp for proof. But for $150-300 its better to buy a brand new body from Warmoth.

There is a like new China made Duo-Sonic for $76 I could chop into a Mustang. But I am wary on what strange kind of wood (or plywood) those body have.

If there is a new Chinese Duo-Sonic for $76, buy it and sell it to me for $150!!! They are NOT plywood, they are basswood, and they are VERY good guitars. In Australia they retail for AUD $899 (about USD $600). Everyone is raving about these things.

If it's an older Affinity series Duo, yeah, by all means buy it and chop it up.

As for the Duo currently under discussion, I was watching that on ebay. I think Surf Green would look good, but LPB is definitely a great idea. It would look great with the white pickguard.

What pickup are you thinking of for the neck?

If only I wanted a Duo-Sonic right now i'll bid on it. But for a Mustang project chop conversion you want a beater that you'll turn into something new and pretty.

The china "Squire Duo-Sonic" I found on eBay looks too good to be chopped. The condition is like-new. The poor guy who bought it probably gave up learning how to play. =)

A little research and it looks exactly like a "Squire Classic Vibe Duo-Sonic

Guitar got here today, pretty good condition, I'm definitely doing the lake placid comp finish. For the neck pickup Im probably gonna do a stacked humbucker, not sure what brand, Ive always loved a humbucker in the neck
