Best Fender Jaguar setup

Hey,

Just interested in seeing what setup people have on their Jaguar in terms of modifications, pickups, knobs etc.. I know that this has probably been posted previously but I would like to re-post it and make it clear that I would like to know about only Jaguars!

I'm interested in modifying my CIJ Jag and I currently have a Mustang bridge but it costs heaps to put it on as I'm only new to gee-tars!

welcome fetch. Mustang bridges aren't that complicated to install, check the faq's on this site. They've gotta have something. I would explain it but I just don't feel like typing alot now so....maybe someone else can explain better. 😁

The best Jaguar set up is in my opinion not to change the bridge, simply set it up properly.

I don't have a Jaguar, but the Jazzmaster is similar enough to talk mods. I've placed a new pickguard and a sloan star on the guitar, everything else remains stock with a proper set-up (check rick's site, as linked in Gavin's post for information on all of that). I plan on replacing the pickups with one of the Seymour Duncan replacement pickups, most notably one that will not change the physical appearance of the guitar. Beyond that, I plan on getting around to staining the white plastics a few shades darker:

At the moment im still working on trying to find my sound and i'm pretty sure I want to change the current stock pickups but I don't know what I should change it to.

There's a post on here from jaguuzar or something, I was thinking of copying him and putting on Jazz pickups but which ones I don't know. The harmony-central reviews are so variable it's almost no help in terms of looking for pickups! Although there is always to option of getting the QTR LBS Seymour Duncan for the Jaguar and "keep it's shape" by not cutting it up. Um I'll post my pics ASAP of my stock Jag (nothing really different from any other stock Jaguar, I just got mine, so Its your basic 2005 crap.. I would've much preferred a vintage 😛) .. but i'm just waiting for my camera to charge!

The black one has a Seymore Duncan Antiquity II in the neck.

The bottom picture was taken about a week ago as I replaced the strings on each guitar before spending an hour or two to perfecty tune and intonate them both.

They're 'Japanese Special' Dragster humbuckers. All of the chrome has been oxidized and looks weird and brown for some reason, except on the bridge pickup under the high E string where finger acid seems to have worn it back to perfect chrome. The knobs are standard for this guitar.

hey there. imo you get a good sound from putting jazzpickups in a jag so yeah go for it . my only concern is that you say you don't know how to put the mustang bridge in your jag ? if you can't do that then you will find it very difficult to do the same mod as i did because it isn't a straight swap infarct personally it was a bitch to do, so i wouldn't if i was you jump straight in a deystroy a good guitar until your a little more confidant with moding.

I didnt think chrome could oxidise? Or is this one of the things where its not actually chrome, but shiny steel that americans call chrome because its shiny?

Nickle on the other hand, does oxidise, but im pretty sure chrome doesn't. Thats why i want to put all nickle hardware on my SG, so it gets that matte/dull aged thing going on in years to come.

Erm, yeah. Here's my Jag. Only thing non-stock is the mustang bridge..

no...chrome doesn't oxidize...and poorly polished steel or poorly chromed steel will rust and/or peel.

I don't know what it is, but it's shiny and oxidized.

I believe that chrome is only used on the AV Jags, not the Japanese.

I also heard something about losing tone or sustain with the Mustang bridge, I'm not sure why it would, but that's what I've heard, innit. Is that true?

hurbet - i would totally agree with you on the sound etc, i was actually thinking of someone else to do it for me.. although i think it'd be expensive and a total waste of money and that i should learn it myself, truth is after all i am only a greener. i haven't been playing very long and i think if i attempt replacing the pickups i'll totally screw up the whole thing and it'd cost me twice as much. oh well. i suppose i'll have to work a bit more to get the cash to put in the pickups! 😎

what do people think of the seymour duncan custom soapbars? i was thinking of them in both the bridge and neck positions.. or if anyone else has a suggestion of a decent pickup i could use please feel free to post it 😁

the sound im going for is a full sound but not so dirty.. as i said i'm only new and i would like to be able to recognize tones and sounds.. and if i wanted dirty i suppose i could always get a distortion pedal or something ! 😛

Unfortunately, nobody has invented a "sustainometer" to actually test this out, so it could just be chalked up to placebo effect.

Maybe a duncan jazz humbucker for the neck? Apparently it gives a nice fat clean tone.

JJLipton yeah I also looked into the SH-2 jazz model pickups from seymour duncan, but would I just use the same on in the bridge position also? Also what do you think of the pickups from Seymour Duncan for the Jazzmaster, but put them in my Jaguar like someone had mentioned earlier in the thread? Which one should I go for there.. I downloaded all the sound samples from the site.. The combination I liked most would be the SH-4 JB Model iin the bridge and also the SH-2 in the neck. What do you guys think? It said it was a good selection on the SD.com website also. They mentioned another pickup in the neck, the SH-1 '59. What do you guys think of that any input from people with prior experience with anyone of these pickusp would be greatly appriciated! Thanks all 😎
