REALLY bright '73 Mustang

Hi all,

Recently picked up a '73 mustang from brother for cheap. The problem i'm having with it is that the pickups sound RATHER bright. All of the electronics are totally stock, which I suppose is the cause for my dilemma. With any other newer guitar i'd just grab a pick-up that I like, wire it in, and call it day. With this guitar, though, a lot of me says I should at least do my best to leave the stock pickups in there.

So...does anyone know if this is a common phenomenon? And if so, is there a less intrusive way around it that is preferred among the community? Through tone filtering or something?

Anybody been screwing with the wiring?

Some parts (i.e.resistors and caps other than the tone one) that aren't supposed to be there? I know you say stock, but those switches are a great place for hiding a cheeky ceramic disc capacitor...

yeah, no.....the switches are just wired up as normal. No passive elements other then the normal .05Uf cap on the tone-control.

My first idea would be to try simple practical things like adjusting the bias on the pickups, rolling off the tone (and/or volume) and mucking around with amp settings.

you could just simply change the pickups to different ones, or kill the treble and raise up the bass on the amp.

or, instead of killing the treble, you could use a treble-boost pedal, it makes the sound fat.

The Dr said in the first post that he really didn't want to change the pickups if it could be avoided.

Treble boost isn't a bad idea. In fact, any pedal with any kind of tone filter could be useful.
