jag reissue rebuild... lil help on some stuff?

Well, first off, my name is Josh, and I am the proud owner of a '99 CIJ Sunburst jaguar.. I have been the original owner for 10 years now.. some pr!ck threw paint thinner on it when I was a kid, so now its time to refinish it, as it was just collecting dust... I only recently realized what I had.. lol... (under normal circumstances I am not usually this dumb 😛)

anyway, I had a few questions...

While I am going through this restore process, im stripping the paint all the way down to the alder and im going to stain it and have a buddy do some art on it before I clearcoat it...

1. I want to change the pickups to something that has a little more "oomph".. I was looking at NOT going with humbuckers, because I dont want to route the body.. Im into alot of really hard music, so I want to get a really raunchy sound with this guitar that would be conducive to harder music..

2. I want a tone control knob that pops up/down, that will give me more tone control.. I am actually open to ANY suggestions that anyone has about the electronics, wiring, etc to get the most kick that I can from this guitar...

any ideas?

First of all, can I just suggest looking at guitarfetish.com and check out the lil killers which are like duncan hot/cool rails 😉 Yeah, they're humbuckers but they fit in the holes with a little work because they're single size. You can also get jag pickups from curtis novak, seymour duncan and I think lindy fralin.

You can get push/pull pots from small bear electronics

Plenty of single coil size humbuckers on the market like mcconachiea said, i think Hot Rails are the highest output of them all. Most of them give a split coil option too, so you could use a push/pull pot to get different tones. Just be aware you cannot refit the 'claw' or cover with all these models, to do that you need either a non triangular base pickup or proper Jaguar replacement pickups.

He cut out the top of his pup cover to expose the rails, a few on here have done it, looks pretty cool.

I think I may go with the hot rails... I have always heard alot of good things about them... thanks for the website suggestions, as well..

how would I go about testing my stock switches to make sure they are ok? Are there better ones that I can get instead of the stock ones? I just want to do this right the first time, and this is my first guitar build.. Im pretty handy, though, as I am a computer tech and mechanic... im not a complete dumbass.. haha

what about the gauge of the wiring to use? any special types of solder? what about the brass plates lining the bottom? should I clean those up and de-solder and run new wires to everything?

NOOOO! do not buy wires/solder from a guitar store, they will f you in the a. however, gfs is great for pickups. small bear also sells wire, and i believe they carry solder as well.

my suggestion for the push/pull would be a series/parallel switch.

I wouldnt buy that stuff from there.. haha... I know where to get solder and wire for next to nothing in town..

Are there any schematics showing how to wire such a switch?

and what is the benefit? I mean, what kind of sound does it give you?

Which GFS pickup would you recommend? im really looking at a pair of those hot rails, but im stuck between those and the SD 1/4 lb...

so, I have my stock neck pickup and another pickup from a different guitar... its solid black, and you cannot see the metal posts (or whatever they are called..) they look like this, but these arent them, as they have no writing on them

but they do look like this... I tested the ohms and its at 8.56 or something.. basically 8.50 ohms... this is tested at the wires, which tells me the pickup is good (right?), as if it were screwed, it wouldnt have continuity...

how would I be able to tell which is the ground wire and which is the signal wire? I have no clue what brand it is, so for me, its impossible to tell... I just want to know how to wire it...

Im hella broke, and just wanna play this thing, so Im going to use these pickups, and notch my stock bridge so I can just play it... Im still taking care of the body very well, but the electronics can wait for a bit, considering this black bridge emg-looking pickup should be pretty hot sounding...

any suggestions?
