Try to invent a NEW music thing, instead of just "bringing back grunge"... You can style yourself (to a certain extent) after a band, just as long as you add your own creative details. Straight ripoffs are a no no...
For instance, I'm currently in a band named Spinoza, where we combine noise, math rock, and post-hardcore in a style reminiscent of Drive Like Jehu. What we bring to the table in terms of originality, though, is that our songs tend to have a good bit of "swing" and we have breakdowns and other facets of different music.
