Jag, must or strat

My name is frankie. I have been playing guitar for 6 years and i already own a strat but its a squire, a tochai les paul and an epiphone dot. I am searching for my 4th guitar and i can not decide between a stratocaster, a jaguar or a mustang.

please reply with your personal prefrance, reasons for this and, if possible, pics of yours for me to look at to help decide. Anything would be helpful.

Welcome to the forum.

First off, all 3 guitars are very different. Because the Jag and Mustang are short scale you really need to try them before you consider buying, the 'feel' is quite different to a standard scale guitar. Sonically there is'nt huge differences, but Strats sound more 'snappy' where as the Jag lacks a lot of sustain, the Mustang is somewhere inbetween.

Whilst i like Stratocasters the volume knob position irritates me and gets in the way when i play, i prefer the knobs out of the way like on the Jag and 'Stang. The fact they are common also puts me off, i like stuff with a bit more mystique and weird shapes.

Jag or Mustang? Hmm, i love the Jag, but the Mustang is a very comfortable guitar. Its light in weight and possibly my favourate neck of all the Fenders. But the Jag tremolo is better imo, it also offers more sounds and its the coolest looking guitar ever made.

Traditional Jags take more setting up though, possibly more so than most guitars. So if you are not used to tinkering around with guitars i would avoid the CIJ vintage reissues and consider a MIM Classic Player.

I have a MIM Stratocaster, and a Reissue Mustang.

Both are my favorite guitars at the moment.

Like Fran said, you first need to play a shortscale before you should buy one. 😉 (as with every guitar)

And if you want, you can always upgrade your Squier Strat with better pickups. 😉

well i have thought about updating my squire but there are so many things wrong with it that i thought i may aswell buy a new, better one. It was crafted in indonisia, it had a terrible bridge that i have tried to ajust to even out octaves, the pegs are either really rusty or too loose tom even bother tightening, the treble knob is completely broken and it took a bit of wiring to make the thing even work.

I thought a new guitar would be easier.

i play a bit of everything,

alternative, plain rock, punk, bit of blues, electronic a little classical

i guess i am looking for a multi purpose guitar that will work for all styles

I'd say the Strat is your best bet there, Jags ideally need pickup upgrades for heavier styles, the Mustang 65 Reissue is quite 'ballsy' though.

hmm, I don't really think that shortscale needs getting used to, he's used to a les paul which is almost as short as a jag anyway.

sure the jaguar looks cool, and the mustang has a certain cult following.

but in reality, they are completely different beasts and can't truly be compared or considered, "close" to anything else.

if you like the style of a jag but prefer the neck of a strat, why not go for a cp jazzmaster?

this is a good idea.

jazzmasters have also proven to be very versatile guitars

even tho jag and stangs have SS necks. my mate Loves his jag but dose not like my stang neck, but i think that the stang has the best neck i have ever played!

i like strats jags and stangs.

I have never played a Jaguar for any great length of time, but I love the body shape. The Jag also has alot of switching options that I would simply never use.

I have played a Mustang, but it did not suit me. I am a pretty sloppy player, and the Mustang seemed to me more suited to a more sure pair of hands. The heavy gloss neck and weak bridge pickup were also turn-offs. I was a big fan of the shorter scale, however, and the neck profile was pretty darn good.

I would go for the strat. There is a reason they are so popular. The are very versatile, great body shape, and have a wonderful sound. The only drawback - as Fran mentioned - is that some people are put off by the 'commoness' (if that's a word) of them. This would not but me off, however. The guitars are popular for many reasons, but the reason they gained the popularity in the first place is because they are good.

At the end of the day, it truly is about personal preference. I'm sure everyone will suggest trying out all three if it is an option.

another plus for the strat is that there are SO MANY places that have parts to customize modify and personalize your guitar. if something craps out on a strat you can find parts for it the same day, and there is a large spectrum of prices as well on the parts. where as mustang and jag parts are not HARD to find but they are not as widespread, and many places just do not carry them.
