Mustang pickup help needed

Ok. I have a Reissue Mustang (basswood body, rosewood fretboard) and I'm looking for new pickups for a nice, warm rock/blues sound.

I like the p-90ish sound of the SSL-4 but I don't know what pickup would work well with that. Maybe Cool Rails or the Little '59 in the bridge? Got any suggestions for a well-balanced setup?

Look into the medium or high output hum canceling pups from DiMarzio(under stratocaster section on dimarzio.com), many of them will fit into a mustang pup cover and you can keep the stock look.

If you want single coils, the SD hot/QP Jaguar pups cant really be beat for mustangs.

If you want single coils Lindy Fralin sells Mustang replacement pickups in various outputs.

You can even order your pickups Overwind or Underwined to your taste.

To make it easy for you they have the: "Blues Special" set Neck: 6.2K Bridge: 7.2K

The JB jr. is a little bit too shrill for my tastes. That's why I was thinking about Cool Rails or the '59. I'll probably end up putting the SSL-4 in the neck and Cool rails or something similar to it in the bridge. But I'll look into those Fralins and DiMarzios first.. 😀

They do a cheap cool rails copy called lil killers in 6k, 10k and 15k versions 😉

They also do a variety of good single coils

I keep wondering if I should try for a thicker, stronger sound by having my vintage Mustang pups rewound, or by trying new ones. So I contacted Guitarfetish (thanks for the tip, Mcconn). Their pups don't quite fit the Mustang, according to Jay there. The closest they have are Strat-sized and he says Mustang pups are a little bit smaller.

Jay suggests using the Seymour Duncan pickups designed for Mustangs.

But, being new to electric guitar, I'm getting bigger sound and discovering new tones as I get better at using more of the potential in my Peavey Classic 30.

you have a F*ing good amp in the classic 30 imho. for the price they Cant! be beat.

yeah, the classic 30 is a great amp. i changed the orig speaker and tubes some time back and it went a long way... its been out of commission for a while though because i recently got a 67 fender vibro champ, talk about tone!
