CIJ Mustang 2001, body wood?

Hi!

I may be able to buy a lake placid blue Competition Mustang with non-matching headstock.

It is "crafted in japan" in 2001 according to the serial.

Does anyone know if this is a basswood guitar, or poplar, or alder perhaps?

I have a poplar mustang and also a basswood jaguar, aswell as an alder jaguar, so

I dont think it to be negative if its basswood, I just want to know.

one thing for sure is that none of the USA and japanese mustangs are alder.

'65 reissues= poplar

'65 VSP mustang reissue= poplar or mahogany

'69 & '73 comp reissues= basswood

Beck edition comp orange mustang= poplar

'78 reissues= ash

LPB comp reissues= poplar based on the picture of a stripped LPB comp stang from Austrailia. the body was greenish wood, which is poplar.

Greenish unpainted wood is a general indication of poplar?

I also have the BECK edition BTW, veeery nice guitar =)

True, NO Mustang was EVER made in alder! Not vintage and not re-issue. Poplar is the most common for vintage and the above list is about right for japanese ones. IMO.

It probably is poplar since Fender japan uses the correct vintage specifications for most of the special or limited run editions.

I like the beck comp orange too, but the BECK decal behind the headstock is a turn-off. they did the same thing with the BECK telecaster too.

I'm collecting historical technical info on Mustangs...trying to weed out the myth & misinformation. Can you guys tell me where you got your info on woods-by-year?

And anyone know what percent, or how many, were Mahogany in the '60s?

I was all over this guitar from the first press release. The ads released listed the wood as Alder, but shortly after the guitars release, everything I found (including Fender's web site) listed it as Basswood. Of course, they have the fine print at the bottom stating that they reserve the right to change anything at anytime, and since I never actually verified what type of wood mine was b4 someone took off w/ it ( 😠 ), I can't say for certain what it was, just the info I know...
