Will a gotoh tune o matic fit a 65RI?

I had an ebay guitar store tell me that a Gotoh TOM will not fit a 65 RI. Is this true?

Not sure if a Gotoh Tune will fit in a Reissue though....... 😕

sure it will fit,..with the right body post

but not as good as the original bridge.

you probably only can intonate in standard tuning!!

It certainly will, and with out ANY permanent modification to the guitar itself.

You will need the Gotoh Nashville Tune-O-Matic, it comes with bridge thimbles that you wrap elecrical tape around then insert them into the bridge thimbles that are already in your mustang. Then you just adjust the bridge height as normal.

You will however need to shim the neck a little to use a TOM to get the action correct. You will want to shim the back end of the neck pocket about two business cards thick,then the TOm will adjust your action perfectly.You need to do this to raise the neck a little as a TOM is a higher bridge than a mustang bridge and if you dont do this your action will be super high and unadjustable.

BTW,you can intonate in ANY tuning. I use TOMS on both my jaguar and 1966 mustang and they intonate perfectly!

I use very odd tunings and never standard and I'm yet to have a problem.

I found a ridiculous amount of shimming was required but i do like my action very low.

I have a TOM on my 66 mustang and its only shimmed very slightly. I like my action around 2mm.

The secret to it is to shim the front a little bit and then the back double or so the front,it changes the neck angle and you can have a TOM with very little shimming!

With the shims on my mustang and jaguar I cant even fit a .88mm tortex pic between the neck and pocket.

the shimming is different from guitar to guitar, some of my mustangs its just a little bit of cardboard, others its a pick, or 2 picks

did you replace the original bridge on your jag? with the same body holes? (that means straight.)

then you must have a very wide t.o.m.! if i'm not mistaking.

i have this setup(with a neck shim), when i tune down a whole step i never can get the low E to intonate.

The bridge post spacing for Gotoh and Gibson TOMS and jaguars,jazzmasters and mustangs is identical!

Yeah,its straight.

I get my Low E string to intonate tuned anywhere from E to B no problem. Its currently in C# and has tons of room either way.

You should have the saddles so the slanted bit faces the headstock and also you should be using 10-46 minimum.

strange,...i flipped the saddles.

i can set it to play,. but not exactly on the right tonation.

i play a lot of power chords and it just don't sound right.

i use 10/52 btw

but maybe with more neck shimming? dont know.

i still want to get the right setup for my t.om.. new saddles.

maybe some luthier who can drill a new body hole so its more offset.

cause i'm limited in tunning now.

i was hoping that i don't encounter these problems when i install my roller t.om. on the mustang!

Somethings up with your guitar cause I actually find there's more room to intonate with a TOM than with the stock bridge on jaguars and mustangs.

Are you sure your guitar has the right scale neck on it? Wass it a stock new guitar when you bought it?

it wasn't stock new,..it already had a t.o.m.

its an avri btw.

and my mustang bridge is wider then the t.o.m.!!

even wider as a roller t.o.m.

on this picture its tuned in D, you clearly can see the saddles are at max

This has me stumped cause mine are fine and everyone I know who uses them are fine too.

Yeah,the string spacing is narrower on TOM...I didnt get what you meant by "wider" before.

This is one reason I use TOMS, I like narrower string spacing for picking.

Anyways there is one thing you can try and it should work and isnt permanent.

You know how you wrap tape around the TOM bridge thimbles to fit into the fender bridge thimbles to make it fit snug yeah? and then you screw in the TOM bridge posts. well on the top one,the bass string side one, take the tape off of it and only put the tape on the front of the TOM bridge thimble so the TOm thimble is offset back a bit compared to the other one,essentially the top of the TOM will be pushed back a good 2-3mm if you do this. You understand? Basically if you dont use tape the TOM will move back and forth in the fender thimbles,take advantage of this and move the bass side back a few mm so you can intonate.

BTW,if you have this tuned in DGCFAD theres something majorily wrong as them saddles do not look like they should if they were to be intonated correctly.

If I had the guitar here I could easily fix it but if you catn maybe, and I fvcking hate saying this, maybe you should take it to a tech to fix....

that was indeed not the right picture

but here it is!!

in standard tuning.

the stang is tuned down a whole step down in the picture i believe,..(its been a while).

but he,..the guitar plays so easy and sound great!!

i doesn't bother me at all!!

maybe i'll try the tape, althoug i know that it won't fit in the holes.

the jag with the black schaller t.o.m.!! it won't intonate a whole step down.

the low E doesn't intonate

the stang is fine but i do want to install a rollerbridge on it.

i have one,...but i didn't had the time to intall.

but i was hoping the bridge would fall more to the back giving it enough space to intonate.

i didn't expect that it actually worked!!! 😁

but it made a big difference,...still need to adjust the neck a bit.

and give it a fine tuneup with heights and all.

but it worked for now. 😉

even got some space left now.
