jag-stang innovation for the time

prior to the jag-stang, had fender ever offered a guitar that had a full sized humbucker in the bridge and a single coil in the neck?

I couldn't really think of one, def not a strat or a jazz/jag. maybe a tele but ive only seen them in with a humbucker in the neck, or two humbuckers

Don't think so.

Strats have been available in HSS configurations for ages and Jackson have been doing it since the 80s. Nothing about the jagstang is really innovative.

Remeber fender is a company just like a Bank or chain store. They want to make money and the Jagstang was the perfect oppurtunity to get money out of rich suburban Nirvana fans. They did happen to create a highly moddable guitar though

Well its just a variation on a pickup configuration based on a mod which kurt did to mustangs.

Cyclone was just after. It addressed some of the 'issues' the jagstang had but it didn't have any market because its like the bastard child of a mustang + strat + jagstang

ALSO some of the late 80s Jackson soloists had a single and humbucker.

Jeff young from Megadeth had one when he was in the band from 1987-1989

If we're not limited to just commercially released guitars I can think of two

The commercially Released Fender HM Strat - there was a rare variant towards the end of the guitar's lifecycle that used a Telecaster pickguard with a slimmed treble side horn and a backwards angled Fender Lace Sensor in the neck. I know for a fact this is a stock model, one of the rhythm guitarists had one years ago. I pulled the pickguard while rebuilding it and noticed the neck pickup cavity had NO HOLES drilled for the humbucker that would normally go there. I looked it up online and sure enough, it's an official style of HM strat Fender made around 1989-1990ish.

Elliot Easton of The Cars used a Fender Lead custom made by Fender for the Panorama tour in 1980. It had a straight humbucker at the bridge and an angled single in the neck. I saw one of these upgraded with a Kahler trem and for sale in the 1990's as a Fender Lead 1 1/2, it was the Guitar Elliot used to record "Magic" on the Heartbeat City album. This variant of the lead was never released commercially though.
