jb magnet

Hey everybody my name is Derek, ive been on this site for many many years but i havent posted much. i have a jagstang that ive modded alot and ill post pics and talk about it at another time. i have a jb in the bridge and the original humbuck for now in the neck. however i dont know if it is because of the ####ty basswood, but the jb sounds way to trebley and shrill to my ears. i like the output and its versatillity, its just to sharp, like glass lol. before i go and replace the pickup, i thought id try a suggestion of replacing the magnet with an alnico 2 magnet. i heard that it is alot more mellow and smoother, and i would still have the versatile sound and output of the jb. has anybody tried this? wut do u guys think of this mod? and where could i find a magnet, ive tried on my own online and cant find anything.

It'd prolly be a major pain to do your idea. However, you could prolly solve your problem by replacing the pots and/or capacitors on your guitar. what kind do you have in there now?

i have 500k pots and no capacitor at this time lol i forget what i had before when i had everything hooked up, but i didnt like the sound then too. i have taken the magnet out of the old pickup just for fun once and it was easy. i just cant finda place to buy them

I think the lack of a capacitor could be your problem... but I dun know crap about electronics and wiring and stuff... if you're dead set on switching the magnets, your best bet would prolly be to buy a cheap GFS (http://www.guitarfetish.com) pickup with the type of magnet you want (Alnico II)

the capacitor is what makes the tone control work, basically the tone control cuts out treble frequencies

by taking out the cap youve effectively bypassed the tone pot, which some people like to do to get more treble, but clearly you would prefer it if the tone pot was not bypassed

get an orange drop capacitor and it should give you the control back 😉

I believe that Wymore.com sells magnets cheap, like around $5. Prob send more on the shipping!

Anywho; might wanna try the alnico 8 as well. I have a Sonic Blue Jag-Stang hussy'd up with Gotoh 510 tuners (which I really like) & a JB in the bridge. It sounds pretty solid in the low end but I could use a little bit more "presence". Considering trying an Alnico 2 magnet to sweeten it up (Seymour himself uses the A2 mag in the JB in his Tele) or the Alnico 8 for a JB on Steroids sound.
