Shields is the cleaner guitarist in MBV from what i've seen live, but dont forget, classic pedals like these cascade well with other gain devices. The Tubescreamer is a prime example. On its own it is a bland and quite feeble Overdrive but put it with a Big Muff or a crunched up valve amp and you sound like Hendrix on a good night.
Either way, if you buy it at a good price, its one of them pedals that will only gain in value over time. You cannot lose.
