massive wiring problem, please help!

I got an input jack today (yes alex, the second jack was for my bass) and want to wire my bass staight to output.

The jack is stereo. so i ignored the bit which sits on the shaft of the plug and wired the white wire to the tip and the black wire to the ground lug. I plugged it in and there was sound, but a huge amount of buzzing, and when touching the end of my cable (which is metal) the buzz went away. However, when i touch the strings the sound doesnt go away, nor when i touch the bridge. There is a wire coming from the bridge into the control cavity but it didnt seem to make a difference when the normal lug was in contact with the ground lug of the output jack or any other lug or anything!

Before my bass was stripped of the output jack, there was a grounding problem then but with this, when i touched the strings it went away, so was liveable but now it just drowns out everything!

Is the ground wire in connected to the bridge?

there is a ground wire from the bridge... but doesnt appear to be doing anything. . . and doesnt affect anything whereever i put it

so there is no volume control? i had this issue on my mustang before. the pickup sounds like its grounded but the bridge isnt. have you tried connecting that bridge ground wire to the the ground lug on the jack?

make sure all grounds are connected to the ground on the jack

also if nothing is attatched to the stereo part of the jack i suppose it must just be sending noise down the cable, try attatching that to ground too

This. I was going to say. Connect ring and sleeve to ground and input to hot. And desolder the other crap that was on there.

so attatch the wire from the bridge (ground) to the ground lug? which has also got the black wire from the pickup there? will also try putting it onto the other lug (the stereo bit).

Gonna do it tomorrow... ive had enough lol

for grounding to work everything that is grounded needs to attatch to the ground on the jack one way or another, on most guitars everything ends up attatching to the pots which then have a wire to the jack, seeing as you dont have any pots all wires need to get to the jack somehow, just as long as theyre all connected together and one is connected to the jack they should be grounded. The extra lug on the jack needing to be grounded is just a theory i came up with when you said the buzzing stops when you touch the cable, so just poke some wire between the lugs and see if it stops 😀

now its just the usual buzz which i had before. which i dont care about lol

the sort of loud grounding problem which was there before is midly annoying. but the fact it works now makes it all cool lol
