Mustang neck question

I'm new to the world of mustangs.

I recently purchased a 2005 CIJ 65 RI Mustang.

I once had an early Jag-stang which I foolishly sold. And what I loved about that Jagstang was the neck.

After reading some posts on this forum I have learned that the Jagstang neck is better in feel to the 65 Mustang neck. I even read that the jag-Stang neck was based on Cobain's 1969 Mustang neck.

Which makes me wonder if I made a mistake buying the 65 ri and what i should have bought was a 69 ri?

I hope I don't get this guitar and the neck i slike a baseball bat..... it's my only concern......

I played a '65 RI at a music store a while back and remember that the neck felt a little bit bigger than my JS neck. It wasn't a ton different but I do believe they are a tiny amount bigger (after all what neck isn't? the JS neck is like a toothpick with strings on it). In any case it was nowhere near a baseball bat type neck. so I dun really think you have to worry.

(PS I have no research whatsoever to back up my claims that the 65 RI necks are fatter, I'm going completely off of feeling... plus, I only played it for a couple of minutes cuz it was horribly out of tune, and I didn't wanna hassle with the Mustang trem when I had a limited amount of time in the store, so I may be completely off base in this. I am simply trying to ease your worries by letting you know that while I think it may be bigger it is still not a very big neck.)

I have the 69 RI, and I've played the 65 RI, and (to my hands) the 69's neck feels better. Like feedback said, the Jagstang's neck is tiny, and I'd say the 69 RI's neck is closer to it, but the 65's one really isn't too different at all.

But it's all personal judgement. I'm sure if I bought the 65 RI before I played the 69 one I'd have liked the 65's neck better 😉

Hate to break it to you, but that's a 69 RI. The guy in the video got it wrong 😉

This is no bad thing. Like I said, I prefer the 69s to the 65s. 😀

Well, the first thing I actually noticed was the Fender decal on the headstock 😆 the ones on the 65 RIs are slightly different. But it was really obvious when I noticed the colour wasn't white, but a more yellow-y like mine. Then when he flipped it over there are quite clearly contours there, and the 65 RIs don't have any. Also, the tuning buttons are metal, not white plastic. 😉

I'd say the 69 RI's neck is closer to that of the Jag-Stang. You wont be disappointed!! 😀

They're about 5 or 6 hundred quid new for a 65 RI. Last time I checked anyway...

so I recieved the guitar last friday.

I like it. But I learned a like my strat better.

The guitar is cool. The only thing is that the previous owner changed the wiring system on the Mustang. I don't like it.

I want the switching system to be the way it was orginnally.

Is it possiable and will any guitar neck know how to do it?

Unless he seriously modded it, yes, it can be rewired to the original spec.

Yeah. If it's only modded to a certain extent it'll be possible to return it to the original. Do you have details of how it's wired now?

Like it was said above; I have absolutley nothing to scientifically base this on other than the years ive spent playing my 4 short scale guitars. Here are my findings:

* '69 RI neck is more of a "C" shape when compared to the Jag-Stang

* Jag-Stang has more of a "D" shape when compared to the '69 RI

* '66 B width Musicmaster II neck is more substantial in the hand (but definatly not Baseball Bat) than the '69 RI

* '64 A width Mustang neck is slightly thinner/or maybe faster than the '69 RI. My personal favorite neck (but not guitar!)

So if i ordered them from thickest to thinest i would be:

B width -> Jag-Stang -> '69 RI -> A width

PS I have never owned a '65 RI & have only played them a couple times.

A better way of describing the difference between the JS & the 69 is that the 69 is more of a circle while the JS is more of an oval...at least to my hands.... either way the difference is negligible. I mean there is a lot more difference between the A & B width vintage necks. The only reason I can tell you they are different is because I use a 69 RI & a JS as my "workhorse" live guitars all the #### time (saves my vintage ones for the studio 🙄 )
