yet another Pickup topic

I have recently acquired both an MIJ Jaguar and MIJ Jazzmaster, and am not really impressed with with the stock pickups. I have been searching the board about replacements, and am wondering abou the possibility of the following:

mixing the AVRI pickups (bridge) with SD Antiquity II's in the necks. Anyone try this? I had planned to use all AVRI's, but they are obviously in short supply.

How do the SD antiquities stack up to the Novaks?

From reading up on FDP the novaks are true to the originals more than the SD's. There's differing opinions though of course, and you'd be better off waiting for Rick and co to reply to your question as they have much more knowledge on this than i do.

i think the antiquities and the novaks are gonna sound just like a '62 jaguar pickup. which is very trebley, tinny and a bit harsh. i've never really liked them.

the AV pickups are more like fuller strat pups, imo. and aren't really meant to be slavish recreations of those old jaguar pups, like the antiquities and novaks are, that nobody really liked anyway

but actually, yeah, i think you could be onto something with putting the thrashy pup in the neck, and the fuller one (AV) in the bridge. i actually love the sound of my '62 neck pup, but hate the bridge one. whereas the fuller AV neck pup can sound a little, dare i say it, too bassy in that position

I have just done this to my CIJ Jag. I put an AV in the bridge and an SD Antiquity II in the neck and it sounds great! 😁 The Antiquity II is just as microphonic as the Jap stock pups though which bugged me a bit, but i usually use the AV bridge pup with distortion (which is potted) so it doesn't bother me that much. The neck pup is at it's best used clean anyway. If your looking to use distortion with both then a set of AV's would be the way to go. One of the reasons i used an SD Ant in the neck was because i couldn't find anyone that stocked the AV.

I have just read this same topic on the fender forum presumably by the same poster. When mixing fender and SD pups should i have switched one of the wires so both pickups are in phase when on together?? 😕 I just soldered them where the stock pups were. They seem to sound ok. 😕

When both pickups are on they appear to be hum cancelling (not very audible at low volume/gain levels though), this is correct isn't it? I have wired them right haven't I? I can't see any other way of doing it. 😕

Anyone? I need to know if i've wired them correctly. Anyone else mixed fender and sd pups and wired them differently? 😆 I have the pickup wires going to the same points on this diagram:

Also, when i put them in, there was no ground wire from the jack socket. Is this normal? I did put one in. Should i have?

Well, I decided to go with Novaks for both the jag and jazz. Hopefully I'll be pleased with them.

He told me he's currently working on a masterbuilt Jaguar with Fender - I guess he's doing the pickups for it ??

I didn't want to mess with mixing pickups on these guitars. If I pick up another jazzmaster I'll try the p-90s or humbuckers in it. I will provide a review with some comparison soundclips once I get them, hopefully in a week or so.
