ok so recently Ive been on a gear binge and during the binge I bought 2 new amps. I bought a epiphone valve special for 50$ and an orange crush 10 also for 50$(both new).
each amp serves a specific purpose for me the crush is for high gain practice, while the valve is more of a blues jam amp.
orange crush 10:
nice construction, easy to dial in, tight crunchy gain, can do a variety of tones fairly easy from hendrix to zep to sabbath and so on. the 2 gain stages work nicely to give a wide variety of drive tone. overall a very nice versatile, high gain practice amp that can get extremely loud for something of its limited size and wattage. I would recommend this amp over all other solid state practice amps in the mainstream. (almost got the 15r but wanted to save money).
valve special:
nice vintage looking class a tube amp with dsp effects and 8ohm expansion outputs. this amp to my ears is very very bassy, and with the back on and a few gain pedals can get very muddy. however if you take he back off it starts to crispen up and shimmer a bit more. the dsp effects are completely worthless as are most dsp effects and I plan to remove them. the reverb however is quite usable but will unfortunately be eliminated with the dsp unit. the gain is very limited with this amp but can produce a nice vintage style blusy breakup. I am expecting that some nice new tubes and a better less bassy speaker would make this a killer little tube amp.
basically I bought the valve to use as a project so thats what im doing but Im new at amp moding and asking advice on what tubes you guys use and what you like about them. what speaker would you reccomend(10") that might suit my needs. if anyone knows a good amp modding sight I would appreciate it thanks.
