Planning a build, help me out?

Hey guys, new member, been lurking for a while though.

I'm trying to get my ideas together to build my first guitar. I have access to loads of woodworking equipment, but not a whole lot of experience right now. I'm thinking of doing a Warmoth project first, before I go and try building from scratch.

And I've gotta build a jagstang. 😉 I love the shape.

I played one in a guitar shop once, I didn't really like the neck (hindsight: I should have bought it anyway!) so if I build one I would want it to be my own version. These specs might change, but right now this is what I'm looking at:

Mahogany or Alder body - undecided. Lime green paintjob

Maple neck, rosewood fretboard, CBS headstock, Grover tuners, 24.75" scale

Tortoise shell pickguard

Bareknuckle P90s (hum-cancelling middle position)

No phase switches. add a 3-way switch where the jack is, move the jack to the bottom (tele style)

No tremolo. String-thru w hardtail bridge (roller-bridge? undecided)

Now, am I going to run into some problems ordering this from Warmoth? 😆 It's not exactly standard Jagstang material. What kind of issues could I potentially run into here? I want everything to be compatible (ie scale length, fretboard radius w bridge, etc) so would I be better off setting this project aside and building it from scratch when I have more experience? Or can this be done?

+1 on the lime green paint job 😲

With a Warmoth body the bridge routes will be for a 24" neck and it will also be routed for the Mustang tremolo. You could maybe ask them to leave out the bridge and trem routes then complete that part yourself.

Fitting a 24.75 neck will mean your bridge will sit further back than the original, so it could leave an unsightly gap if you use a stock pickguard. Just bare that in mind, it may mean cutting a custom guard.

Your other ideas are great, Icey chose thru body stringing and it does aid resonance. I chose mahogany on my build as it is warm yet bright depending on other components.

In a nutshell, i'd contact warmoth on this project and see if they can accomodate your ideas.

Thanks man! Good call on the pickguard / bridge thing. Anybody here do custom guards that could hook me up with one?

Also, was browsing through threads and found a build where a couple people commented that it would look wrong without the trem tailpiece, so maybe I'll leave it on even if its just for decoration.

I'll definitely shoot an email over to Warmoth. Their online options don't include P90 pickguard holes, so that might be another issue to address with a custom guard.

It might look okay without the trem/tail piece, Iceys looked fine to me and my Jazzblaster is string thru..

Because your pickup routes are hidden under the guard you could easily enlarge them yourself for P90s, even with a sharp wood chisel and drill. A bit messy but who's gonna see it?

Build it from scratch!

I built my first body from scratch like 3 months ago, and it's completely changed my life (and my garage). Now I've built like 20 of them!

I'll GIVE you router templates if you want to build this thing from scratch.

Give me three and a half minutes to post about some of my builds (I'm a n00b; just joined here a minute ago)... And hopefully you'll be inspired to cut some wood!

Man I am definitely inspired here! I have some nice black Walnut I always thought about using for a guitar.. I'm not very familiar with how it would sound in the end though, anybody know?

You should fan out the string ferrules, sort of like a Squier Venus...

I just think it would look cool 😀

Otherwise (if it were mine) I'd look into Duo Sonic II bridges, or a Toronado bridge... If you make a Jag Stang with a Duo Sonic bridge, it could be called a "Jag-o-Sonic"

Good call on the string holes.

And now that I think about it, Im probably gonna end up with more of a surf / seafoam green color, and either black, cream, or tort guard.

Thanks dude. Its not one of my builds (its Cowbell/robert originals), i got it in a trade. The color is Dakota Red with a slight burst on the body. 😀
