not really. you need the flexibility of rubberish insulation tape. if you use solid dowels, with no play in them, you basically won't be able to raise the bridge very well. firstly you'd have to have both sides of the assey the exact same height, and secondly you'd have to raise both sides simultaneously with 2 allen keys. mezzio tried to make some dowels for one, but he gave up, saying it wasn't worthwhile. and he knows a lot about engineering
