Hello,

i'm new here,let me introduce...

I'm Kurt,42 years and live in the North-West coast in Belgium.

I've played about 10 years bass and since 3 years guitar.

I love all kind of music however it was Cobain that make me picked up a guitar.

For the moment i study evening conservatori here in ostend,jazz & light music to improve my playing.

So that's about it.

Yes i'm a Cobain diehard fan and that's why i'm looking to buy a Mustang.But i have some questions and think you guy's will help me out.Here in the local shops i don't find any Mustangs so i have to order one on line...

Is it a big difference comparing to the scale of a strat/tele?(and yes i'm small and have thinny hands).

Can you describe the sound,will it be suitable for blues or jazz?

What are your pro's & contra's?

Hope you're help me out and can order a Mustang...

I have smallish hands too, and have found that the Short scale, and neck radius of the Jazz, Jag, and Mustang family to be very playable. It took a little getting used to because of how noticably round the fretboard is, but I certainly enjoy it.

The only con that I can think of, is how heavy my instrument is. I play on a 1966 Mustang, and it is noticably heavier than my 2000ish mim strat. I am not sure about the reissues, but I think they are lighter compared to the vintage. Oh, And I really do not like the tremolo system, but I just take out the arm and ignore it.

i don't think the RI are as heavy, i like the trem even is it is crap.

Question 1:

The scale probably won't take a lot of getting used to. These are very fun guitars to play, and even people like me with massive meat pads instead of hands have managed to play them properly.

Question 2:

Sound is pretty subjective, but I'd say the Mustang is versatile enough to play blues and jazz, easy.

Question 3:

Pros: Great guitar, high quality, fun to play, looks cool, sounds great, easy to mod (if you have to), fairly unique, versatile, light.

Cons: Trem needs a decent set up to work (if at all), short scale is difficult for some, strings tend to be a little loose, you might need babe repellant when handling it.

Kurt, I have medium-sized hands and the neck of my old 1965 Mustang is very playable for me. I do notice that it gets a bit tight playing up close to the body, but I'm adjusting to that okay.

I was struck by Hundred's "heavy" comment. My Mustang is light, 7 pounds...about 3 kilos... (sorry, not sure about kilos) and very comfortable to "wear" all night. Mine is a Poplar body. I believe a small number were Mohagony, which is heavier.

I love the quality, playability, tones and looks of my Mustang and think you'll be very happy with yours when you get it, Kurt. Welcome to the site!

P.S.

Be careful buying by mail, sight unseen, Kurt. There's a short-scale Mustang...with the 21-fret, 22.5-inch (or 3/4 scale) neck...and you need to play one before deciding to buy. It's very small.

You'll probably like the 22-fret, 24-inch neck Mustang. The 24-inch was more popular and 3/4 scale Mustangs are more rare but they're out there.

In the opinion of Mr. Maxima, twenty four inches is still relatively short, the same as the Fender Jaguar but a full inch and a half shorter than the Stratocaster and three-quarters of an inch shorter than the Gibson Les Paul. The short scale neck makes this guitar perfect for people with small hands, and also enhances the ability to use the tremolo arm for up-bends.
