I had a problem intonating my 10-52's... just the bass E string, it wouldn't go back far enough. I put a TOM in and slanted the bass side back to compensate, not recommending you do this though, cause it requires drilling... I'd try the "shave the saddle idea"
Truss rod isn't that big of a deal. I made a gauge to measure my truss rod using guitar strings. I took a 8, 10, 12, 14 & 16 gauge string, drilled holes thru a block of wood and inserted the strings thru the block.
Put a capo on the 1st fret. Press down on the last fret of the guitar. Slide the feeler gauge thru the gap between the 12th fret (gap between top of the fret & bottom of the string). Normal truss rod relief is around 8 or 9... depends on the player.
