Distance between tailpiece and the bridge needed

Hi,

I have a Jag-Stang project going on and I'm considering a tail piece solution different from the stock one. I'm thinking about mounting a custom tailpiece further away from bridge to get an oscillation sink for them sympathetic vibrations noise and behind the bridge picking stuff.

I'd like some of you lucky Jag/Jmaster owners to measure the distance from the tailpiece edge where strings come out to the line going thru the centers of your bridge thimbles.

Maybe you have ideas how to claculate the distance to get the most noise 😆

third, quarter, fifth or sixth of the scale length? I don't know 😕

Hmm, pretty sure no one here has the tools to measure this. That being said, several members have put Jaguar/ Jazzmaster vibratos on their Jag-Stang guitars...

Fran, Garagetone, probably some more I'm forgetting 😆 .

Maybe from what I wrote it looks kinda difficult, but all you need is this:

get in under the bridge, put zero end to the vertical plate of the vibrato, where strings come out and look approximately how much is to the middle of the bridge. 😎

OH!

When I read this, my eyes went straight to the "calculate" part.

As far as I know, most people here should be able to tell you the standard distance (I can't though, I'm right useless 😆 ).

As for calculating a way to get more noise, I can't really help you there either, but from my experience, you can generate plenty of excellent noises with the standard bridge set up. Ask Lee Ranaldo.

For the violin it's a fourth or a fifth.

I measured the jazzmaster in photoshop and it looks like it's about 1/4 of the neck scale for the distance between the bridge and the tail - behind the bridge sectioned is "tuned for" double octave above open string if I'm correct 😎

I don't know this offhand, but I'll measure my SJM when I get home and I'll post how much space there is.

Okay I just measured, and the distance from the back of the bridge to the tailpiece is roughly 1 1/2".

Nah it's regular tunomatic setup I think, not classic JM, strings too short between the bridge and tail to make any significant resonance...

I'm sorry. I guess I worded my previous post wrong. There's about 1 1/2" of wood between the tailpiece, and bridge. You have to remember that the tailpiece itself has a few inches of distance itself.
