What do you think of the Jagmaster?

ok - more to pick your brains about: - so, I'm kinda 'bound-up" on my choice of pups (that hotrod humbucker set ) just how important is getting the F-spacing (JB TB4) on the bridge pup vs the standard SH4? (since the trem bridge is yer basic strat style) and at the neck? (it seems to me that the neck would take the standard (G-spacing?) SH2 jazz pup - my bro swears by the 'proper" and "correct" spacing - but I have a luthier friend who's like, "meh....spacing-schmacing! -barely a noticable difference! " - your thoughts?

I'm very much in agreement with your luthier friend, some people swear it makes a difference if the polepieces are lined up or not, other people say there's no real difference. I personally have never really heard a difference. The way I look at it is if the difference is so small that it is unnoticeable to some, it's prolly negligable. Just buy a freaking pickup and put it in I say.

EDIT: as a side note if you wanted to add even more versatility without having to like get a new pickguard or anything you could get a couple of Seymour Duncan Triple Shot mounting rings

you see those lil switches on the ring? those allow you to put the humbucker in series, parallel, or turn off either of the coils. Also, from my understanding it's a relatively painless mod. As I recall though they were a bit pricy. But from the sound of it you're looking for versatility, so I just figured I'd throw that out there.

(PS they come in black too)

yeah man - I just saw those rings on the duncan site - jeez, this cheap guitar is costing me $$$ (ah well....who needs food?) - thanks for lookin' out for me! I really appreciate it.....now if I could ONLY get the old band back together..... 🚬

I'm of the 'spacing schmacing' crowd as well. I used to own a Squier 51 with a G-spaced pickup in the bridge and it sounded glorious. No problem with bend-outs (I can't remember what the correct term is).

It really made no difference to me.

The only thing I noticed was that the pickup didn't LOOK quite as cosy as it could have, but to me, that's a very minor gripe.

well....I guess I COULD search for this info - but I'm a lazy SOB who would rather PLAY (and drink) than talk about it - so here are my questions -

are the "duncan designed" stock pups the same size (as in "I don't have to cut the pickguard up") as either the G or F spacing sized pups? - (in particular, the Seymour Duncan JB and Jazz Hum/Trem-buckers)

my gear-head brother (who is the tech who will be wiring this bad-boy up for me) has raised the question of the blender knob replacing the pickup selector toggle - it would just turn up one and the other down rather than keeping one full volume and varying the other (like with TWO volume knobs - one for each pup) I personally don't see it like that - (and don't WANT to add additional knobs) - Is it as simple as just cranking up the master and BLENDing like I think? - he's suggesting using the existing knob locations for TWO volumes and the toggle location for a (and here's where he lost me) a master tone(?) (he's a hyper intelligent WORDY guy - ask him what time it is and he gives you the history of man's perception of time + how to build a clock! LOL! - love the guy though...he's the one who !st showed me (in 1970 - I was 7 years old) how to plug in his '57(?) tele through a fuzz box - into his fender bassman and play a root position E chord - at VOLUME - then told me never to touch his gear when he wasn't home - yeah...RIGHT! like that was EVER gonna happen! - he also gave me my first guitar and has either given me or sold me mucho gear at great prices through the years)

I have purchased the triple shot rings ( $50 - ouch!) - I DO want to get as many tonal variations and make this guitar as diverse as possible ( since I am TOO jazzy for ROCK and TOO rockin' for JAZZ! + I write in alot of styles ) while keeping the pickguard/top relatively uncluttered )

also - I am not sure of the stock pots on the Jagmaster - I'm thinking about replacing them, while we're fully involved in surgery, - what say you? suggestions? 250k? (I have NO idea what I'm talking about 😲 - but read stuff on these forums)

so - I'm kinda hot on getting this thing going so I can PLAY it - is there anything I am missing? I truely appreciate all the feedback (no pun intended) and suggestions from you guys -

OK - lemme run my current (hopefully FINAL) idea by you guys -

(if you are a wiring genius or serious tech - PLEASE chime in!) - What do you think of this?:

Bridge pup - SDuncan TB4 JB

Neck pup - SDuncan SH1 N ('59)

SD triple shot rings

(All purchased as of today)

keeping the 3 way toggle pup selector

Adding a Blend pot that is active ONLY when the center position (both pickups) is selected (not sure of it's placement/location yet)

+ Replacing the tone pot with a stacked pot (basically separate tone controls for both pups on a single split/dual knob)

So...Does anyone have an idea how this would be wired? (can't find anything EXACTLY like this on the web ) Any suggestions for values on the pots? caps? (I figure I am gonna gut all the stock electronics unless something is obviously useable)

....and....for future NON-electric mods - is it true that A 25.5 strat neck can be used as a replacement on the CIC Jagmaster?

This is true.

I can't offer any help about the rest of what you asked. I pay to have all my mods done by pro. I tell him what I want to achieve, he makes it happen. I'm the enabler, he is the actualizer.

yeah - my brother is doing the work - but since he is such a busy guy with many projects of his own - he wants me to do the research myself and email him what I come up with first - I have most of the schematics - wiring diagrams and such - but I haven't found anyone who has done the EXACT mods TOGETHER that I want done - I think I have most of what I need - he's smart/talented enough to figure out the rest - I was just hoping to get some tech expertise to back me up - this probably isn't the right forum or thread - thanks to all who helped me through my "thinking aloud" phase of this project!

1) any humbucker should fit in the hole without having to cut your pickguard the only difference between a regular pup and a trembucker is the spacing, not the size, they are all standard sized

2) I can't say for certain about the blend knob, but I'm pretty sure it'll work fine as a replacement for the toggle switch without all that extra crap on there.

3) you should prolly go with 500k pots for humbuckers as that's pretty much the norm, humbuckers can sound pretty muddy and lame with 250k pots.... although my Jag-stang has the stock 250k pots and I like the sound of it..... but still go for the 500k ones.... I think the Jagmaster comes stock with 500k pots, but they're prolly pretty low end ones and could stand replacing, but if you dun replace em it's not gonna be the end of the world....

4) I'm not really sure about this, but I've heard that replacing the cheap capacitor on the tone pot with an orange drop capacitor makes a world of difference, but I have no experience with the matter just passing along what I've heard.

thanks FBIMF! I'll TRY to be patient and continue to search and search again (re) - and maybe post to the seymour duncan forum - check my feedback and shoot for next week to do the actual work, when it would be easier for both my bro and myself

Not true from my experience.

When I replaced the bridge humbucker in my Jagmaster with a chrome-covered humbucker from a Tele Custom it didn't fit and the pickguard needed to be cut.

Ya I know Tele Custom pups are bigger, but I he wasn't talking about them (I believe he was talking about a JB and another pup) so I didn't say anything. Sorry for the musunderstanding

the pickups are the JB and the SH1N "59 - you are right - covered humbuckers will NOT fit in the stock unmodified Squier pickguard - as far as I can tell, (by just eyeballing it), the SD pups are the same size as the "duncan designed" stocks - so no probs there...heading out right now to see if my local shops have the pots I need to wire this up! - thanks for yer feedback! apparently, my guitar (starting with serial CY08) is 24" (I measured it) - so I can't switch my strat neck onto it - no matter HOW you do the math (I have measured every length - and the "footprint" - butt end of neck (whatever the hell you call it - the portion of the neck that sits in the body ) is the same as on my Frankenstrat warmoth neck - the 12th fret would not be the 1/2 way point between nut and bridge - Damn IT! - I really wanted to swap out that neck! - LOL! this is getting to be a very expensive (for me) CHEAP guitar mod! - I'm thinking of naming this guitar "stone soup" (maybe "Rock Soup" is more appropriate) - I think the only thing that will remain original is the body! ...and my ADHD "hyper focus" is NOT helping matters!

I though jagmasters did the whole convesion neck thing? meh, dont really know about jagmasters or the conversion necks.

I'm pretty sure all non-vista series 24" scale (weren't they 25.5" for a brief while?) Jagmasters have conversion necks, meaning you should be able to swap necks fine even though they are different scale lengths.......

I have youtube vids of the guitar being played with the original neck and the non-conversion 25.5" scale strat neck with a locking nut to confirm this.

the 12th fret needs to be the 1/2 way point between the bridge and the nut.period.
