I think strings on the mustang are mere preference.
I used Fender Bullet 009-042 for a long time on the Mustang, now I'm using the 009-046 gauge sets now, which are kinda cool because the thicker low strings are giving me low end. I'm also trying some sets on my Jag-Stang and Jazzmaster ATM, I like the effect on the Jazzmaster, but I'm thinking about moving my Jag-Stang back to the Stainless 009-042 or 009-040 sets because those EMG's get too thick and undefined with thicker strings when running with super-high gain.
I may however, be moving back to Earnie Ball because our local chain store is the only place that carried Fender, and their Fender string selection is dwindling, before too long I might end up using Earnie Ball pink labels (009-046).
