My problem is the volume pot. When I turn down below 8 or so, it loses all definition and punch, it just gives up the funk in ever conceivable way. This is untenable to my ears and playing.
Any advice out there? Are there upgrades or brands that would be better?

I'm figuring you mean the sound turns dull as the pot is turned down, then most likely it's not a new pot but a Treble Bypass capacitor you are looking for, it's a .001 pf capacitor across the input and output lugs of the volume pot (center and left when facing the pot from the non-shaft side).
On a Jaguar this can get a little weird though, I did this to mine for awhile and it caused the strangle switch to make the volume pot act more like a really really strange tone control of sorts, at least in my case it did.
As far as pots go, I don't even follow the brands, if any are printed, actually, most of my guitars still have the cheap "junky" pots that one gets by default.
